The Windsor Hotel was the first military deployment site in California. The area now known as downtown Windsor was a battlefield during the Mexican-American War and General Antonio López de Santa Anna's campaign against Samba Hill in 1848. In 1862, the Battle of Cahuenga Pass took place near present-day Los Angeles when Confederate forces attacked Ulysses S. Grant's army while it was march through the Santa Monica Mountains. After reaching Wilmington, California on July 4th, 1862, Grant's army marched back down the mountains to Pasadena where it arrived on July 9th before turning around and marching north again to Irvine before arriving at Wilmington on July 12th. It was here that Union General John J. Pershing met Confederate General Pio Garcia for what would be one of history's most famous battles. On November 10th, 1898, Spanish forces invaded Northern California from Mexico City under Emperor Pedro Eugenio Francisco Zaldívar y Gámez in an attempt to reestablish Spanish rule over all of California following years of American control over that portion of Mexico. On December 13th, 1898 Mexican troops advanced into Windsor after being informed by scouts that American soldiers were stationed there. A skirmish ensued between American and Mexican soldiers but no action occurred until January 6th when artillery batteries opened fire upon an encampment situated about five miles northeast of town center believed to contain only unarmed civilians who had been ordered not to fight by their general commanding the Expeditionary Forces operating in California at this time (General José Joaquín Moreira). In order to investigate these reports Generals O'Connell and Smith engaged in a pitched battle with estimated Casualties reported as 50 Americans dead and 350 Mexicans killed or wounded – this event is considered one of the bloodiest engagements fought during Californian war for which there are any records extant today[1].
