Windsor is located on the southern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and on the border of Kern County to the west. It was named after King George III's son Windsor in recognition of his help with financing these operations. The first post office opened in 1856 and remained open until 1919. In 1872, a group led by American miner Jens Jensen donated land for a school and depot which became known as "Windsor School". The first postmaster also served as town historian from 1872-1919. In 1902, when water was piped into town from nearby Kern River veins, many people moved to live closer to civilization because they saw this as an opportunity for better healthcare than what they could find back home basing themselves primarily on their own efforts and resources alone. Windsor, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. Windsor's founding date is unknown but it likely occurred before 1853 when the area was part of Mono County. The first post office in Windsor opened on October 15, 1873. By 1907, the population had grown to 1,827 and by 1933 it had reached 3,000. Windsor experienced significant growth during World War II with its entry into the war as an American military town. The town's economy changed after the war when industry moved in and manufacturing jobs disappeared. In recent years, there has been some growth back into the community due to new housing developments and a growing number of students attending local schools. The history of Windsor dates back to 1861 when Captain John Fenton surveyed what would become present-day Kern County and named it for his friend George Windsor (1798-1864). A few years later, William Hutton granted land east ofpresent-day Thornburg for a sawmill which became known as Huttonville Mill Company. By 1865, there were 10 businesses in downtown Windsor including five stores and three hotels catering to soldiers stationed in nearby Fort Sill (now Oklahoma City) during the Mexican-American War. The mill closed in 1874 but reopened in 1903 under new management as the Standard Oil Company's Hastings Millinery Department store which continued until 1963 when it was demolished to make way for redevelopment that included apartments and a shopping mall called "The Mall". From 1863 until 1871, two Jordan Brothers livery barns were used by settlers along U Street between Seventh Avenue and Interstate 5th Street; one burned down in 1863 while another caught fire on November 21st 1865 from an exploding barrel fillers' balloon near Post Office Square; both barns were replaced by Strauss Bros., grocery Merchants Association warehouses about 1916 following their purchase of adjacent land from Jardine & Co.; Strauss Bros.' Warehouse #1 still stands today adjacent to IH5 southbound lanes just north of State Route 101W In 1886 James Waddell settled on Land Grant Road within present day Mount Vernon which he called "New Town." Withdrawal of troops from southern Mexico following General Antonio López de Santa Anna's ouster led Waddell to abandon New Town and build instead Whipple Barracks on what is now Open Road about 1/4 mile east northeast of present day Whipple House property line New Town grew quickly due largely to irrigation efforts begun by District 8 farm commissioner Atherton Gifford with help from local entrepreneur Elmer Clements;Whipple Barracks remained operational until shortly after World War II ending allotees quit receiving water or could not afford repairs necessary for wartime use In 1914 printer Victor Bendix started publishing "The Mercury" newspaper here followed soon thereafter by other publishers including Harry Heineman who published his paper at nearby Stockton until 1957 During prohibition era many people worked at various liquor stores across state lines selling booze through mail order or sometimes delivering bottles directly to customers After repeal Bridgeport Gold Mines announced plans regarding operations affecting approximately 160 acres adjoining township limits fences surrounding mines began disappearing giving rise throughout various rumors related thereto such as one stating that gold had actually been mined on site - these stories continue even today with no clear evidence connecting any mining activity whatsoever with township boundaries German settlement began around 1840 with scattered settlements occurring over several decades prior primarily along San Joaquin River Valley floor area especially near Mulholland Dam Big Hole Creek Settlement ceased circa 1850 although intermittent contact continued until 1913 when United States Fish & Wildlife Service confiscated all remaining assets . One group claiming direct lineage from earliest Ganz Empire settlements living near Willits/Napa Valley region includes members currently residingnear Mud Lake vicinity conducting research for upcoming project entitled "The History of Rancho Nuevo: 1777-1937" A few months after being appointed acting director general for lands northward om mission territory purchasing unclaimed land parcels totaling 4 miles wide extending eastward from Mission San José northwestwardly lying claimable lands lying within said boundary sold meadows containing pasturage rights village lot 10x12 feet square situated pleasantly cultivated my father having done great business therein
