The Coast Guard's History in Woodland, California begins with the establishment of the Coast Guard Station in 1879. The station was located on the present-day site of the Woodland Municipal Airport. In 1902, the Coast Guard Station moved to its current location on Promenade Drive in Woodland, and was renamed Harbor Defense Command. In 1912, Harbor Defense Command merged with predecessor Naval District 9 to form Naval District 8. The district headquarters moved from San Francisco to New York City in 1915. On 1 January 1919, Naval District 8 was redesignated as Coastal Zone Squadron 5 which remained operational until it disbanded on 15 September 1944 when all coastal zone squadrons were combined into Coastal Zone Squadron 2 under command of Commander United States Forces European disembarkation area at Bruxelles ( Belgium). In 1933, Commander United States Forces Europe reorganized as Headquarters United States Service Force Europe and enlarged to include an air traffic control center at Rheims-sur-Mer ( France) which became Air Traffic Control Command (ATCC). On 1 October 1945Air Traffic Control Command was redesignated as Headquarters U.S. Coast Guard Operations Atlantic Fleet and continued operations until it disbanded on 7 November 1946 when all coast guard commands were combined into Headquarters USCG Pacific Fleet under command of Commodore George Fenton Cushing. On 15 September 1944, after World War II ended and American forces returned home from overseas duty, Coastal Zone Squadron 2 was reorganized as a service branch unit called Harbor Defense Unit 3 with jurisdiction over all coastline between Point Reyes National Seashore and Ensenada Island; this included portions of what is now Ventura County and parts of mainland Los Angeles County including Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. harbor defense unit 3 operated from a new facility at Point Loma where it remained until its abolition on 18 May 1947 when all service branches were combined into Combatant Commands pursuant to Secretary Forrestal's Departmental Order No.: 3334 dated 6 May 1947 published by Federal Register Number: 66708 . As combatant commands increased their naval intelligence capabilities following World War II they also requested that radar be installed along America's coasts for military use only within certain areas so that gunfire support could be available for amphibious assaults or other night attacks against enemy targets should those targets become unavailable during daylight hours; this request led to creation of Radarman's Mate Training School (RMT) at Southern California Training Center near Long Beach in 1951 followed by Electronics Technician training school at Buena Park Army Air Field later that year both schools becoming operational naval radar ranges known today as Naval Radarmans School - Western Hemisphere Division while Harbor Defense Unit 3 headquarters moved back to Point Loma where they remain today.
