In 1877, California was admitted to the United States as a state and its capital was moved from Monterey to Sacramento. The new state included parts of what are now the Central Valley and Western Sierra Nevada. The area that would become Woodland had been part of Rancho San Joaquin, which was granted to Isabella Payne in 1853 by Governor Manuel Nieto. Payne sold the land to John Sutter in 1864 for $4,000. This initial grant covered about 640 acres (250 hectares) and became known as Rancho San Joaquin de la Cañada. In 1876, following Sutter's death, his wife Maria Juana de la Cruz took over rancho management while he left United States citizenship and died in England intestate. Eventually, her son Francisco José Sanchez becamequestor of Rancho San Joaquin de la Cañada and claimed it as his own property until his death in 1917 without children born on it. The first development around Woodland began with cattle grazing during thegolden age of California agriculture; later came farming opium poppies for export to China using a wagon road between Stockton and Benicia. During World War II much of this activity stopped because of strategic bombing raids on nearby cities such as Oakland and Berkeley by the AmericanAAF (the United States Air Force). However some small businesses continued until after World War II when oil exploration began making Woodland an important production center for this valuable resource. Since then there have been many major changes to Woodland including population growth (especially since the 1990s), suburbanization, conversion into housing developments etc., but its traditional agricultural economy has continued unchanged so that today it is one of the most diverse areas in Northern California with a range of scenery from rolling hills studded with vineyards through woodlands all the way down to lower desert valleys

Woodland, California is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States. The city was founded in 1847 by prospectors and traders as a small outpost on the edge of what is now Fresno County. Woodland grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location near the San Joaquin Valley and its natural resources including timber, oak trees, and grapes. The city's population peaked in 1910 at over 100,000 people but declined following World War I and World War II. The population has since grown again, reaching a peak of nearly 255,000 people in 2000. Woodland is home to several colleges and universities such as UC Berkeley and UCLA. It also has a number of high-end businesses, including Google Earth headquarters and two Apple corporate campuses.
In 1875, the land that would become Woodland was part of the Rancho Santa Cruz Mexican land grant. The grant was given to Juan Bautista Alvarado and Francisco Lopez. In 1876, Alvarado built a ranch house on what is now the corner of Elm and San Pablo Streets in Woodland. In 1878, Lopez purchased the same property from Alvarado, and began to build a larger home on it. The two men also bought some additional land around it, which became known as "The Hill". In 1889, both men died without leaving any children behind. Their heirs sold their holdings in The Hill to James Irvine for $4,000 cash. James Irvine started building his own homes in The Hill in 1905. He named his home Irvine Park after himself and his wife's parents (Irvine had married Anna Maria Bauman).
