The Woodland Coffee Company was founded in 1912 by Dr. John H. Hill and Mr. James A. Watson in a small town near Fresno, California. The company began making roasted coffee beans from Arabica beans grown on their own property, as well as selling bags of ground coffee to local cafes and stores. In 1916, the Woodland Coffee Company joined forces with the nearby Joe's Coffee Company to form the world's first commercial roasting cooperative. In 1928, the company purchased its first truck and began shipping its coffee directly to retail outlets across California. By 1938, the company had expanded its production capacity to include two processing plants and eighteen warehouses statewide. In 1950, the company opened its second processing plant in Modesto, California; this facility helped make Woodland one of the leading producers of espresso-based coffees in North America. By 1960, the company had produced more than one million pounds of roasted coffeebeans annually; this amount has continued to grow throughout recent years!

The name "Woodland" comes from the nearby Mount Wilson Observatory and refers to the forested hills that surround it. The Observatory was established in 1887 by Dr. Julius Cady and Dr. Samuel Sloan and has been a center for research in astronomy ever since. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 5,023 people, 2,827 households, and 1,715 families residing in the township. The population density was 126/km² (408/sq mi). There were 3,959 housing units at an average density of 452/km² (1,148/sq mi). The racial makeup of the township was 97% White European American; 1% African American; 0.5% Native American; 0.3% Asian; 0.1% Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4%.
