The annexation vote was successful and the new county was established on October 10, 1853. On July 25, 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina and caused the evacuation of most of Douglas County including Woodland. On December 12 of that year Confederate forces returned and burned all but one house in Santa Clara Valley before retreating back into Charleston.
