The Mexicans were able to drive the Ohlones from their land and started to build a rancho on what is now known as Baseline Road. Captain Edward Waddell of the U.S. Marines arrived at Mount Shasta, also known as "The Hill" in 1851 and began to survey for a route over Shasta Pass into modern day Silicon Valley. He recommended that goods reach San Francisco by way of Red Bluff before traveling downriver through Mill Creek Canyon and then down White Butte onto Mission Bayou where they could be unloaded onshore at Folsom Landing before being transported across Red Bluff Passage to Stockton for further shipment upriver
On November 20, 1873, the California Gold Rush began with a group of men led by S.F. Alameda driving their wagons up the Sierra Nevada Mountains. By December 12, they had discovered what would become known as the Toquecahua River and named it after General José Antonio de la Cañada y Melo, who had explored this area in 1765.
