The Navy's deployed gift history can be traced back to the early 1900s in Woodland, California. The USS Constitution was stationed in the city from 1907-1909 and Naval Shipyard workers donated a number of items to the city's museum, including a cannon and ship model. In 1916, the City Council enacted an ordinance authorising the donation of naval artifacts to the Woodland Museum. The following year, Naval Shipyard workers donated two ships - USS Constitution (CVA-64) and USS Nevada (AGS-5). In 1922, Naval Shipyard employees donated three more ships - USS Oklahoma (LCS-1), USS Virginia (CG-4) and USS Wasp (ASR-2). These donations were made in commemoration of World War I veteran Admiral Ernest J. King who had served as Commandant of Naval Academy since 1921. In 1938, Naval Shipyard employees donated five more ships -USS Lexington (CVN-65), USS Saratoga (CVN-6), USS Enterprise(CVN-7),USS John F Kennedy(CVN 47) andUSS Forrestal(FDRL)-in memory of President Franklin D Roosevelt. This donation was made to commemorate Roosevelt's launching of HMS Queen Elizabeth at Pearl Harbor on 4 December 1941 which marked America's entry into World War II. After World War II ended in 1945, naval shipbuilders ceased operations at Naval Shipyards in San Diego until 1954 when they reopened as a new shipbuilding facility known as Navistar Incorporated. In 1978, Navistar merged with General Dynamics Corporation creating Northrop Grumman Corporation which continued to produce naval vessels through its navies worldwide until 2003 when it merged with Lockheed Martin Company forming LockheedMartin Brownstown Company LLC.

Originally from the USS Constitution Museum's Historical Collection, this navy deployed gift history begins with the ship's commissioning in 1801. From then until 1898, the Constitution served as flagship of Commodore David Dixon Porter's Squadron of sailboats that operated off Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The squadron was also responsible for screening American merchant shipping and protecting American interests in the Caribbean. After serving as a training vessel at Norfolk, Virginia, Constitution became flagship of Rear Admiral John J. Pershing's Fleet Carrier Group on May 1, 1898 while underway conducting exercises near Havana. While steaming through stormy seas off Cuba, Constitution were destroyed by a fire caused by an exploding shell while disembarking troops ashore. The loss of these vessels left America deeply shaken and began to prepare for World War I which would soon begin. During World War I, Constitution served as flagship of Admiral George Dewey's Cruiser Division #1 which conducted patrols throughout the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa searching for submarines and German ships operating in support of Austria-Hungary’s war effort. In early 1922, when Dewey retired from active duty he took command of Destroyer Squadron 5 and renamed itConstitution-5 Patrol Squadron Commander (later Commander) after his old friend Rear Admiral John J Pershing who had been killed in action days earlier during World War I. In 1924 President Franklin D Roosevelt created Naval Forces Europe which included U.S Navy units located in European ports along with Marine units attached to various commands under Rear Admiral Ernest King Jr.. At this time America began plans to build a permanent naval presence in Europe following its victory over Japan at Midway Island in 1942; however these plans were postponed due toWorld War II mobilization requirements.) Woodland, California is a small town located in Fresno County, California. The population was 3,986 at the 2010 census. Woodland was founded in 1853 by Captain George W. Smith and his wife Narcissa Whitman. The town was named for a grove of trees near the original site of the community. The first post office in Woodland opened on December 1, 1855. In 1865, the county seat of Fresno County was moved from Tomales to Woodland because of its larger population size and closer location to San Francisco Bay. The first school in Woodland opened on October 15, 1867. It served as an elementary school until it closed in 1916 due to lack of students and money for repairs. A new school opened in 1920 and served grades K-12 until it closed in 1984 due to budget cuts. In 1924, the United States Air Force purchased land east of the town limits for use as an airfield known as Luke Air Force Base which would later become Holloman AFB). During World War II (1941-1945), both Luke AFB and Holloman AFB were used extensively by the United StatesAAF; however, only Luke AFB remains operational today as an active USAF installation with civilian use being provided by San Antonio Army National Guard units flying exercises overLuke Field Reserve Airport adjacent to downtown San Antonio Texas since 1996 while Holloman AFB has been converted into a museum dedicated exclusively to aircraft operation during World War II with exhibit areas covering more than 50 acres Woodland is home to several interesting museums including: American Folklife Museum; California Historical Society; Fresno Civic Auditorium; Joe Louis Arena; Monterey Peninsula Aquariums; Pomona Fairgrounds Museum - formerly Exposition Hall; Riverside Municipal Court Building - also home to City Council Chambers before conversion into offices
