In 1851, Commodore John Biddle sent a shipment of 1,500 rounds of artillery ammunition to USS Constitution in San Francisco Bay. This was one of the largest gifts ever given by the navy. In 1907, Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter presented USS Constitution with 220 pounds of munitions along with uniforms and equipment. These donations represented a significant shift in naval policy towards weapons procurement rather than just giving financial support to warships. The Navy has been a part of California's fabric for many years. The first recorded reference to the navy in Woodland is from 1821 when Captain John C. Fremont ordered HMS Discovery to search for new land in the area. After finding no suitable sites, the ship returned to San Francisco and reported her findings to the navy on July 4th of that year. In 1846, the navy set up a base at Point Reyes Station in order to help with conflicts between Mexico and California during the Mexican-American War. In 1849, Commodore John D. Sloat founded Naval Air Station (NAS) Oakland which served as a testing ground for naval aircraft and later became one of America's largest naval air stations. NAS Oakland was also home to USS Constitution (CGN-4), America's first steamboat capable of sailing against wind and current. On December 12th, 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor resulting in America being involved in World War II. The navy played an important role playing both offensively and defensively throughout the war; they were responsible for sinking many Japanese ships as well as providing support to American forces fighting on multiple fronts including Manchuria, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, etc.. On December 8th, 1945 Japan signed surrendering their military forces without any further battle taking place; this marks the end of World War II for the United States Navy
