Woodland, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 3,674 at the 2010 census. Woodland was founded in 1865 by Captain John Sutter and his men from the ship "Sacramento" on land grant from the Mexican government. The name of the town derived from an oak tree that grew near where it now stands. By 1872, when Captain Waddell mapped what would become Kern County, he named it after his friend and mentor General George Custer. The first settler in what would become Woodland was Jobn Benedict who arrived in 1866. He built a cabin on the site of present-day headquarters of Southern Pacific Railroad Company. In 1870, Mrs. Anna Bogan established a Female school which became one of the most important elements of early Woodland community life. In 1871, Elisha Goodloe settled on land now known as East Meadow and began to grow grain for local consumption and export to San Francisco Bay Area marketplaces In 1876 Richard Hatton moved to Woodland from Stockton with his family and started a grocery store called The Hatton Store opposite today’s Headquarters of Southern Pacific Railroad Company In 1886 cornerstone was laid for First Methodist Episcopal Church which served as center of worship until 1930 In 1899 lumber company founded by Edward Fenton bought 130 acres southwest corner of Third Street & Center Avenue east side lot . This property later became home to Enterprise Oil Refinery On July 16th 1923 sawtooth tornado touched down within two miles (3 km) or so southeast corner Of First & Main Streets in downtown Guthrie Oklahoma City killing fifty people then tearing through entire city destroying homes businesses trees power lines etc before dissipating over open fields
Woodland was founded in 1859 by John C. Frémont and his brother-in-law, George Armstrong Clark. The first post office at Woodland was established in 1861. In 1868, the town of Woodland was incorporated as a city with a population of 150. In 1907, the city merged with nearby Fruita to form an enlarged Fruita- woodland Combined Statistical Area with a population of 2,500.
