One of the earliest coffee roasters in Woodland was John Morse. Morse roasted coffee beans on his family’s small farm until 1829. In that year, he opened his own business, Morse Coffee House, in what is now known as Market Square. From his business, Morse began selling coffee beans direct to consumers through postcards and newspapers. He also served as a judge at local markets and gave advice on brewing methods. This type of commercial coffee service was common during this time period; many small businesses took advantage of the increased demand for quality beans from investors and customers alike. It wasn't until 1862 that Alfred Pease started roasting coffee in town on West Street. This move marked the beginning of Woodland's long relationship with coffee!

Woodland, California was first populated in 1849 by Ohlone people. The town of Woodland was founded on the east bank of the San Joaquin River by Captain John Sutter and his party of Forty-Niners. The early settlers were farmers and trappers, but by 1860 they had developed a prosperous millinery and grocery business. In 1872, Woodland became part of the new counties of Kern and Fresno, created when California split into two parts. The area around Woodland was rich in natural resources, including water rights to the Sacramento River and timberlands that stretched from Stockton to Bakersfield. By 1900, much of the county had been destroyed by fire as a result of overgrazing and logging. But in 1909, when president William McKinley announced that America would enter World War I, many businesses decided to stay open despite the economic destruction caused by war. In 1916, after years of planning and construction at a cost of $150 million dollars, Pacific Gas & Electric Company built its first hydroelectric plant at Oroville Dam on Lake Oroville near Woodland. This dam is now one of the most important symbols associated with Southern California’s history because it allowed for reliable water supply for cities like Los Angeles and Orange County during times of drought. But even though PG&E was successful in developing this new technology, it soon became clear that electricity could not be used solely to sustain industrial production; rather it needed to be applied to other physical tasks such as farming or transportation. So in 1938 PG&E merged with Northern Power Service (NPS) forming what is now known as PG&E Corporation. This decision marked an important change for PG&E because until then it had been purely an electrical utility company with no infrastructure components beyond transmission lines between power plants across Californias urban areas and agricultural fields Outside these areas there was little chance that electric vehicles or heavy machinery could reach people’s homes without being towed into towns or villages alongroadways where electrified wires connected households directly to local substations
The area now known as Woodland, California was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The community of Woodland was created in 1775 when Captain James Cook discovered what is now Santa Cruz Island and named it after his home town of Woolston, England. The first European to visit the island was Gaspar de Portolà, who named it San Francisco de Asís on 10 November 1769. Open-air markets and schools were established at various points along the coast during this time, including at Point Pinos on Santa Cruz County's east side. In 1821, a group of Mormons led by Joseph Smith founded Salt Lake City in present-day Utah; they called their new city Nauvoo because of an ancient site where they thought salt water would rise and form an Isle. However, due to increasing population pressure and persecution from Mormon opponents, Nauvoo was abandoned in 1844. During California's Gold Rush period (1849-60), many small towns and villages sprang up around major goldfields such as Fillmore and Sutro City; all but one were destroyed by fire or robbery within a year of their establishment. One exception was Woodland which survived for over twenty years until it was burned down by looters in 1865 following a gold rush frenzy that had driven prices sky high. In 1850s, woodlands enjoyed some popularity as a place for unmarried women to go "milking" cows; however this practice gradually gave way to more common practices such as gardening or picking flowers among other things during this time period. In 1889, General Ulysses S Grant visited Woodland while on campaign trail in Oregon; he spent several days visiting local businesses before returning home to report favorably about the state of affairs there. During World War II veteran's housing projects were built throughout Northern California using lumber that had been cut from these same woods; these projects are still being used today as low-income housing units.
