The area was part of the ancient Chumash people, and early Spanish explorers discovered this region in 1769 while searching for a route to Acapulco. In 1846, John Sutter founded the town of Sutterville on land he had purchased from the Chumash people. Sutterville grew quickly, becoming one of California's most populous towns by 1860. In 1872, Sutterville was renamed Yorba Linda after James Humes Yorba, an Englishman who had visited California during that year. Yorba Linda became a city in 1926 and experienced rapid growth under its first mayor, Arthur Dorman. The city experienced another growth spurt in 1958 when it merged with neighboring Irvine to form the largest city in Orange County by that point. Growth stopped shortly thereafter as Irvine began to become moreentric and less supportive of downtown development than Yorba Linda. However, new businesses and residents soon revived downtownsactivityandthecity regained its former prominence as a center for business and culture. In recent decades, Downtown has seen a resurgence due to new development along Third Street including several large mixed-use projects completed since 2013 which have made it an attractive destination for retail tenants as well as cultural events such as art exhibitions and concerts
