The Yorba Linda Army Depot was first established in 1951 as the Irvine Army Ammunition Plant. The depot served as a major center for ammunition production during the Korean War, and later became a major armaments storage facility for the United StatesArmy. In 1990, the depot was transferred to the California National Guard and renamed Fort Irwin Army Depot. The depot is now part of NAVY's Southern California Weapons Storage Facility. The Yorba Linda Army Depot gift history began in 1951 with the purchase of a truckload of rifles from the United States. The depot functioned as an armory and rifle range until 1962, when it was renamed the Yorba Linda Armory. In 1969, the depot was again renamed the Yorba Linda Army Reserve Base when it became part of California's National Guard. The base served as a storage facility for military equipment until 1992 when it became an army post-processing center.
Yorba Linda, California (just east of San Francisco) is a city in south-central California. The population was 97,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Orange County and home to the University of California, Irvine. The first permanent settler in what would become Yorba Linda was Captain John C. Fremont who set up his camp on Rancho Santa Margarita in 1839. In 1851, George Hearst established a ranchos sheep and cattle operation on Rancho Rinconada where Yorba Linda now stands. In 1864, Stephen Fenton purchased Rancho Rinconada from George Hearst for $2,000 cash and began to build the town which would be named after him - Fentonville. The first post office was established in 1865 with three stores as its cornerstone occupants: J.B. Peddle & Son (now Canon City), Wm Hogg (later Torrance) and James Buchanan (now Fullerton). On January 1, 1886, it became an incorporated city with a population of 507 residents according to the Ulysses S Grant Birthplace Study prepared by Drs. Hiram Gardner and Jesse Lasky Grant at UC Riverside’s campus archives under direction of Professor emeritus Luther Burbank II On September 25th 1898 – one month before America went into World War I – Lieutenant Colonel William Gorgas arrived at Fentonville from Sausalito with orders to take control of all military forces within Orange County including Yorba Linda due to growing hostility between Americans living there and those based in San Francisco; Gorgas did not find much support locally for taking over control from Commodore Perry’s Marines stationed there Gorgas renamed Yorba Linda “Fentonville” upon his arrival following suggestions made by General Orders No 3-1410 dated December 2nd 1898 issued by Headquarters Marine Corps Commanding General Edward Mott In 1903 various housing developments called North Beach were built adjacent to Fentonville center while East Beach developed closer to downtown near today's Chino Hills shopping mall . To this day many people believe that North Beach was actually designed by Stanford White who also designed Rockridge High School located nearby

The history of Yorba Linda, California is reflective of its entire region. The area now known as Yorba Linda was first settled by the Ohlone in the late 1800s. The Ohlone were a Native American people who lived in Northern California. In 1821, they were forced out of their land and relocated to present-day Orange County. Over time, the Ohlone fell back into poverty and retreated from society completely. By 1850, they had all but disappeared from California. Meanwhile, other groups began to settle in the area around Orange County. These newcomers were made up of European Americans who had come west to escape famine in their home countries. They brought with them their technology and ideas for democracy and self-reliance. This group of settlers called themselves the “Los Angeles Company” because they wanted to create a town on what would become downtown Los Angeles. One of these early Los Angeles Company settlers was James Irvine (1786-1859). He arrived in 1825 and developed what is now North Hollywood into a thriving town that attracted actors, musicians, entrepreneurs, and others interested in starting new businesses downtown. Irvine also became one of the largest landowners in Orange County – he owned more than 1,000 acres near Newport Beach! But it wasn’t just Irvine who started building important civic institutions in Orange County; his son David also played an important role during this time period. David founded Anaheim City College (now rivaled by UCLA) and helped build many other infrastructure projects throughout Orange County. Both men are buried at Anaheim Cemetery – you can visit both graves today!
