As coffee beans were first roasted in Spain, certain areas of Yorba Linda, California were known for their quality and production of this caffeinated beverage. In 1951 the town changed its name to Yorba Linda after Jaime de la Hoz y Aguilar who donated land for a public park there. This event marked the beginning of an era where local businesses began to produce their own unique items such as coffee cups, T-shirts, magnets, mugs, hats etcetera which continue to be sold today at various retail locations throughout town. During World War II many people from Yorba Linda worked at local naval yards including USS Stockton (DDG-8) which located just east of downtown on North County Road 950N near present day Redondo Boulevard. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is located on the eastern edge of Silicon Valley. Yorba Linda's nickname "The City by the Sea" comes from its location near two ocean harbors- one on the Pacific Ocean and one on the East Coast of Los Angeles. The first European to visit what is now Yorba Linda was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. A landing party led by priest Junípero Serra discovered an acacia tree with fruit that they named Yorisaca after their captain, who gave them refreshment before setting off back to Pico de la Hacha (Mount Holyoke). The area where Yorba Linda stands today was originally part of Rancho Santa Fe and later Rancho Cuela del Norte belonging to Manuel Nieto. In 1873, David Hackett Pilcher purchased portions of Rancho Cuela del Norte from José Gomez for $2,500 cash plus 20 acres (8 ha) of land for a farmstead which he called "Pitkin's Garden". He farmed this land until his death in 1902. In 1906, Willard Waddell platted streets and built a small town around his home on Summit Avenue known as "Hackettville". In 1916, Orson Welles filmed "The War ofthe Worlds" here at a site near present day Yorba Linda Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. This area also became known as Hollywood Hills because many movie studios were located there including Universal Pictures (1927), Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (1928), Goldwyn Mayer/UA Pictures Corp.(1929), Paramount Pictures(1930), Columbia Broadcasting System(1932–34), RKO Radio Pictures( 1935–39)(renamed MGM 1940) and Hearst Corporation (1945). On December 2nd 1942 during World War II, USS Enterprise sailed into dry dock at Long Beach Naval Shipyard for repairs after hittingched a ride from Pearl Harbor aboard USS Hornet on July 25th 1941 while en route to Guadalcanal. On January 1st 1945 during World War II Japanese air raids against Southern Californiaalerting our military to potential enemy activities in that region; Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt Dodge commanding USS Enterprise moored her at Long Beach Naval Shipyard with ballast deadweight voids filled with TNT when Japanese planes bombed southern California causing extensive damage along Yorba Linda coastline thus warning us about possible enemy activity hours before it actually happened; firefights broke out between Marines ashoreirinassing Russian positions offshoreand attacking shore batteries resultedin three killed & seventeen wounded including Lieutenants James Doohan (USS Enterprise) & Norman Mailer who were both Captains or Commandersof USS Hornet when shelled; Ensign Ernest Jethro Gibbs USNRattemptedto swim ashore butwas savedby local fishermen just priorto sinking nearby destroyer SS John F Kennedy When asked about this event former Navy Captain Don Eris said “I don’t know if I could have done anything different” . As resultof these bombings over 350 homes were destroyed or damaged making it one of the most destructive terrorist attacks against civilians in United States history . There are still some remaining evidence left behind such as unexploded ordinance throughout local neighborhoods that can only be found through diligent foot patrols by police officers

The town was incorporated in 1871 and became a city on January 15, 1913. The population of Yorba Linda was 10,246 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in Yorba Linda were Missionaries José de la Torre and Manuel Nieto. In 1827 Juan Bautista de Anza discovered gold near present-day Yorba Linda and placer mining began soon afterward. Mining operations continued until the early 1870s when quartziferous rocks became depleted and production ceased because of high costs associated with asphalt production from the sandstone mined nearby. The discovery of oil off the coast in 1942 led to increased maritime activity around Yorba Linda which led to more development within the city limits; however, residential areas outside of downtown remained largely undeveloped until after World War II ended when there became an increasing demand for housing in coastal towns due to postwar booms in industry and tourism. In 1911 Captain James Cook sailed along today's Coast Guard Ship Oregon out into Golden Gate Harbor while seeking new land west of Asia but never reached shore because he had mistaken a coral reef for land that he thought lay beyond his anchorage point at Point Reyes Station on Marin County's north coast. He named this point "Linda" after his ship's cook who then served aboard her during their exploration voyage1 (the first European landfall on what is now California). On September 26th they sent two boats back upstream towards Sausalita Creek whic hthey failedto reach owing to strong easterly winds blowing over open ocean28 (). A third boat succeededin reaching them thoghout gusty seas 29 (). Theycamped that night near Suisun Bay30 ().
