The Coast Guard has been in Yorba Linda since the early 1920s. The first coast guard station was established on Foothill Boulevard in 1921. The current terminal building was built in 1951. In 1967, the California Division of Parks and Recreation purchased land at Point Loma to create a park named after Rear Admiral George C. Smith. This park became part of the present-day Yorba Linda County Park system. In 1981, the Coast Guard commissioned its first ship, the USCGC Padre Island, during a commemoration of their 50th anniversary in Yorba Linda. At that time, there were only three coast guard stations throughout California; two were located in San Diego and one was located in Orange County (the latter being closed by 2009). Since then, Coast Guard Station Yorba Linda has become an important part of our state's maritime defense effort with its installation of new radar and sonar equipment as well as its law enforcement capabilities which include coastal area surveillance and Search and Rescue missions. The Coast Guard gift history in Yorba Linda, California begins with Chief Petty Officer Harry L. Sewell who served from 1923 to 1951. He was followed by First Lieutenant Edward W. "Ted" Fenton who served from 1951 to 1968 and then Captain Charles E. Weisbach who served from 1968 to 1984. From 1984 until 1997 First Lieutenant Ronald P. Yorba Linda is a small city located in the San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 53,821 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in San Bernardino County and second largest city in Orange County. Yorba Linda is also part of Greater Los Angeles. The first people to live here were Native Americans and they called it "Waco" because of a hill that overlooked their settlement. In 1824, Major General Antonio Armijo organized a party of Mexican soldiers to explore what lay beyond the Santa Ana Mountains. They named this new place Yerba Buena because of its beauty and springs near by. Many pioneers came here during the mid-19th century looking for land to settle on or become farmers after discovering gold discoveries in nearby Kern County and Tulare County. One group from San Francisco started an agricultural colony in what is now downtown Yorba Linda and named it Rancho Bernardo de las Palmas y Toro (later renamed Rancho Seco). In 1872, Captain Ayer bought some 160 acres of oak timbered land south of town from José Castro and began development as Yerba Linda Village which grew slowly but surely into one of Southern California's leading towns! In 1903, fire destroyed much of downtown including many homes built since 1872. The next year, Charles Hite developed a water system that provided drinking water for all residents without purchase or subscription from any local business or political entity until 1949 when Loyola University became associated with the town through an agreement made between then Mayor Eileen Fenton and then-President John McCormick . After World War II ended, many Japanese American men living adjacent to Westwood Village—now called Koreatown—were transferred to Ybor City pursuant to Executive Order 9066 (“ order ”) issued on December 14, 1942 by President Franklin D Roosevelt . Most were sent there because their families had been ordered out of their homes east of Palo Alto due to newly discovered oil reserves in southern California . Lutheran pastor Drury preached weekly services at Stauffer Park across from Westwood before relocating his congregation to build a church there on June 15,. 1945 under Operation Overlord – America’s military operation against Nazi Germany – thus fulfilling God’s plan for saving Dinah Shoreman’s life!
