Yorba Linda is a city in Northern California, United States. It was founded on the Yorba Linda Peninsula by Spanish colonists in 1777 and named for Saint John's Chapel, a religious congregation on the peninsula. The city was incorporated as a town on February 14, 1874, and became an unincorporated community on October 15 of that year. On January 1, 1951, it became part of Orange County. It is located in the San Fernando Valley region of Southern California. The population of Yorba Linda was estimated to be over 143,000 as of 2017[1]. The first Anglo settlers in what would become Orange County were William Jones and his brother Thomas Jones who arrived at Monterey Bay about 1811 from Yorkshire England with six other passengers including their father John Jones. They landed near what is now Half Moon Bay on September 6th 1811 and started homesteading approximately five miles east of present day Yorba Linda. From there they traded goods with Native American peoples before building themselves some rudimentary shelter around 1800near today's Waterford Park Boulevard and Crespi Avenue Some early pioneers also built a small cabin near today's Western Dunes Recreation Area south of SR-33 just west of the mouth of Highway 128 (now SR-805). In those days there were no roads or sidewalks so access to these areas was limited which made life much more difficult back then! By 1840 most people had either been killed by Indians or had left the area because they could not survive without white help. Only two families remained until after 1850 when gold seekers began flowing into Orange County looking for fortunes beyond what could be found at home (and many did not return), among them Wm Hogg who came ashore in 1851 One can only imagine how difficult it must have been for these pioneer families to keep up with all this new technology given that even today our town has few if any telephone poles! Many years later when I went out Walking my dog one morning last fall I saw several old postcards from those earlier days littering various parts of downtown – proof indeed that progress does not always go hand-in-hand with convenience! During the late 1800s and early 1900s granite quarries operating out west produced high quality items such as countertops, paving stones etc., which helped drive down prices locally but also created quite a bit traffic along US 101 throughout central Orange County making travel dangerous during rush hours without purchased insurance! This actually led to increased business opportunities for local entrepreneurs like Mayor Harry Riley who decided to build an expressway through downtown linking western Santa Ana with eastern Anaheim creating jobs right where he wanted them! Unfortunately little thought was given to ecology when making this decision as well as traffic patterns which resulted in bicyclists pounding away at both sides of the road creating gridlock along portions of I-5 EB/WB for many years afterwards! In fact one should never ride their bike within 100 feet OF ANY car or bus stop due TO CHANCES OF LOSS OF BIKES IN A CRASH!! Traffic has calmed down considerably since then but we still cannot get ridof THAT SUSPENSE OF ONGOING DRIVING Tensions between different social groups continue unabated
