When the first coffee beans were roasted in Yorba Linda, California, it was a small town of about 25 residents. The first two roasters were citizens of Yorba Linda and they only roasted between May and November. However, within a few years, other entrepreneurs had started up their own roasting businesses in the area. By 1876, there were at least six different coffee roasters operating in Yorba Linda. The first mention of coffee being roasted in Yorba Linda comes from an advertisement placed by the Dutch Coffee Company in 1876. The ad mentioned that they would be selling “roasted Java [beans], French pressed [beans] and green beans” so anyone looking for quality coffee should head to Holland Park. In 1877, Jardine & Hastings published an article called “The Use of Coffee Grounds and Roasting METHODS IN YORBA LINDA” which introduced people to the concept of espresso machines. This article described how to roast coffee using a water-bath method which is still popular today. In 1880, Mr. Fenton opened his own business called Fenton's Coffee House which became the longest running coffee house in Orange County until it closed its doors in 1984. His success allowed him to cultivate some of Orange County's earliest bean trees and he even got involved with packaging caffeine for distribution throughout Southern California. In 1886, Mr. Fenton founded Jardine & Hastings who also became one of the premier grocery chains in Northern California during this time period (along with Safeway). Their first store was located on Stockton Street near downtown Los Angeles; however, they soon opened stores all over Southern California including San Francisco and Ventura County (in addition to Orange County). From 1886-1915, Jardine & Hastings was responsible for exporting more than 100 million pounds of ground coffee valued at $2 million annually! During World War I (1914-18), many businesses closed due to wartime shortages but Mr. Fenton managed to keep his business going despite having no employees other than his wife who cooked breakfast each morning while he worked late into the night! He also managed to get help from friends like Harry Langdon who donated 2 tons of rawJava beans per month so that Mr. Fenton could continue producing high quality espresso drinks without interruption! Yorba Linda is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 38,853 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Orange County and the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after Los Angeles. The area now occupied by Yorba Linda was first settled by Native Americans, who named it Yuma Creek after their hunting ground on nearby Yuma Mountains. The area was part of Rancho San Luis Rey de Baja Ferruvia during Mexican–American War; it became part of Orange County when Spain ceded California to America in 1821. On March 14, 1865, two days after General George Armstrong Custer's surrender at Appomattox Court House and his flight from Lexington Barracks near Petersburg, Virginia (now Charlottesville), General John J. Pershing ordered all American forces in Southern California to cross the state line into Mexico and rendezvous with him at Saltillo outside of Monterrey before moving on to fight against Aguilar Pico in Veracruz Province. This order marked the end of American military occupation of California for over a decade. In 1901, Yorba Linda was incorporated as a town under State code 10271; it would be reincorporated as a city on January 1st, 1907 following passage of Chapter 940 entitled "An Act Pour Déclarer et Reglementer les Cités de la Cité d'Orange et des Villes Associées dans le Comté de Los Angeles" (Public Law 7052). On December 12th 1915 an act known as the Municipal Code Amendment Act added three more cities to Yorba Linda: Anaheim (October 15th 1916), Huntington Beach (January 3rd 1917), and Laguna Hills (December 5th 1917).
