It was here that the United States Navy's first operational Boeing P-17 Flying Fortress squadron came into being on December 8, 1912. The station also saw its first combat action during World War I when the USS Naha bombed and strafed an enemy base off the coast of Japan on October 6, 1918. In 1941, Naval Station Yorba Linda became home to America's last carrier group commanded by Admiral Chester Nimitz. The giant carriers HMS Illustrious and HMS Ark Royal were based at the station during World War II before they were converted to aircraft carriers and sailed back to escort convoys across the Pacific.
Yorba Linda is a city located in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 149,824 as of the 2010 census. The name Yorba Linda comes from the two-word Spanish phrase "yorba" meaning "bay" and "linda" meaning "tree." It was given to the city by General Mariano Vallejo because he found it on his trip through California in 1847. The first permanent settler in Yorba Linda was Captain George A. Smith who arrived in 1835 and built a cabin on the bank of the Sacramento River. He named the settlement after his home town of York, England. In 1840, Captain John Sutter founded Sutter's Row at Yorba Linda which became an important artery for trade between Northern Californias and Mexico City. On July 4, 1849, General Mariano Vallejo arrived in Yoroidaloa with 517 men searching for gold discovered near Mendocino County. They camped alongshore until they ran out of food and were forced to departure on July 10th with only 33 men remaining including Vallejo himself who walked 10 miles downriver to find new land where he could prospect for gold without fear of attack by Native Americans or hostile Indians living nearby. On July 12th they reached their current location at Point Arena where they erected a small cabin before continuing their journey upriver to build larger settlements such as point Arena (1850), Redwood Valley (1851), and Gearhart Ranch (1852). All these early settlements were abandoned when sea levels began rising making access difficult and costly to exploit gold deposits below ground. With no other viable option available for mining operations there was little incentive for settlers to remain within present day Yorba Linda limits during this period; however some did establish homesteads around Point Arena including Eustace Mulligan whose adobe redoubt still stands today overlooking Highway 101 just south of town center across from Orchard Park Golf Course Lane . Yorba Linda, California is located in the low desert of northern California. It is bordered by Fresno County to the north and east, Orange County to the south and west, and Kern County to the northwest. The population was 2,951 as of 2010. Inland Empire Boulevard stretches through downtown Yorba Linda, linking it with nearby communities of Mono and Artesia. The area that now makes up Yorba Linda was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Bakersfield in 1777. The region became part of Alta California under Mexican sovereignty following their victory over Mexico at Buena Vista on October 6, 1846. When California gained statehood in 1850, it included parts of what are now Yorba Linda and Placer counties as well as portions of Redding and Nevada Counties. Yorba Linda was founded on December 7, 1887 by brothers George W. Dixon and Salmon P. Dixon from Minneapolis Minnesota along I-5 south of San Francisco Bay Bridge. They named it for Captain John Yorke who had commanded a British military expedition against Mexican forces during the Mexican War (1846-48). The town developed around a depot they built on the shoreline of Lake Oroville which they used to ship goods across the lake into Northern California
In 1847, the first land grant in Yorba Linda was given to James Irvine. The grant allowed Irvine to build a mill on his Rancho Santa Clara. In 1856, the town of Yorba Linda was founded by Captain Prentice and John Daly. The town stood until 1889 when it burned down due to a lightning strike.
