Yuba City was founded by James W. Yuba and his family in 1878. The first post office in Yuba City was established on October 25, 1878, and named for James W. Yuba's father-in-law, John C. Yuba City is a city in Siskiyou County, California, United States. The population was 14,868 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Redding to the north and east, Stockton to the south and west, and Pinole to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit Yuba City were Juan Bautista de Anza in 1824 and his party of Spanish adventurers who surveyed what was then part of Mexican territory. The town was founded on November 1, 1825 by George Waddell from British Columbia as Washingoe Crossing on the Sacramento River. On December 17th of that year, Waddell named it after General John C. Fremont’s headquarters at Yuba Lake in central California during the time when he led an advance against Mexican forces under Antonio López de Santa Anna. A post office was established at Yuba City on January 5th of 1827 under the name Washoe Crossing but it failed to take hold because no people wanted to move there for fear of being cut off from civilization by Indians living near them on their ranchos ( estates). In 1828 John Day arrived from Seattle with his family and built a cabin near present day downtown Yuba City; later that year he donated land for a school which became known as Day High School today. In 1830–31 Jens Christensen started grading streets in what is now downtown Yuba City while working for André Molitor & Co., a flour mill operated out of Stockton until 1861 when it merged with Northern Pacific Railroad.
