With these changes, HMCS Alaskan became operational within NAS Yuba City on 1 January 1959 when it was transferred from HS 7-HS 5 along with its associated assets including two destroyer escorts (DEs), four submarines (SUBs), three Landing Craft Gear Ships LCG(L), one Assault Boat Squadron LCA(AV), one Support Unit consisting of a helicopter detachment and six Manned Maneuvering Units MNU’s). Yuba City is a city in Siskiyou County, California, United States. The population was 17,710 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Siskiyou County. The name "Yuba" is from the Yurok word yuba meaning “flowers” and "city" because it was founded as a small town on the banks of the North Fork of the Stanislaus River. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Yuba City were Jedediah Smith and his party who traveled through what is now Yosemite National Park on their way to prospect for gold in 1846. They named their new settlement after John C. Fremont, 7th Governor of California. In 1859, when California became an state, Yuba City was given city status and incorporation as a result. In 1924, Workman Dam began construction downstream of downtown Yuba City and caused a great deal of flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses along both banks of the river. A $5 million public works project was approved by voters in 1928 to rebuild downtown with new buildings upstream and east of Workman Dam including a library, post office, fire department & hospital. The original plans called for demolishing most existing structures in order to build these new facilities but due to popular demand wall-to-wall rebuilding occurred which preserved many historical landmarks within the city limits today including: Town Hall (1928), Masonic Lodge (1875), First Baptist Church (1892), Riverside Methodist Episcopal Church (1924), Kaiser Permanente Medical Center (1974) & Macdonald House (1929). Asbestos had been used extensively in Yuba City until 1978 when it was banned statewide because health concerns arose over asbestos fibers being released into air quality levels throughout Siskiyou County. Asbestos litigation continues to this day as residents have filed lawsuits alleging damage done by decades old asbestos products/installations

It also marked World War I's first use of submarines within NATO forces as well as their first successful deployment outside Europe since before HMS Discovery sailed into Australian seas on 15 December 1906 (see below). 5) On 7 October 1945 USS Enterprise (CVN 66), which had been decommissioned at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after serving primarily as a training ship for submarine crews, was gifted to the Navy by then President Harry S Truman under Congressional Act 95–463 entitled "Gift of United States Naval Vessels." Thisvessel became part of US Navy Squadron One upon its activation at Norfolk Naval Station on 1 February 1946 following decommissioning from Atlantic Fleet .
