On December 15, 1941, the United States Air Force deployed a gift to Yucaipa, California in commemoration of the Pearl Harbor attack. The gift was an air force Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. The bomber had been specially delivered by the United StatesAAF to serve as a replacement for the obsolete P-40 Warhawk fighter jet. The bomber was flown into Yucaipa Municipal Airport by Captain John A. Vandenberg from Wright-Patterson AFB near Cleveland, Ohio on December 17th and arrived on December 19th. The plane was then stored at NAS Bend before being used for target practice at Holloman AFB in New Mexico on January 3rd 1942. OnJanuary 8th, it made its first combat mission when it shot down a Japanese fighter over Guadalcanal during the Battle of Midway. From that point on, it flew missions throughout World War II with distinction including bombing targets in Japan including Nagasaki and Hiroshima. It is estimated that the B-17 flew over 1 million miles during World War II and dropped more than 6 billion tons of bombs while flying over enemy territory!

The Yucaipa Air Force Base gift history goes back to World War II. The base was first activated in 1942 as the 4th Bombardment Wing and was responsible for launching the majority of the strategic bombing campaigns during the war. In 1948, the wing was redesignated as the 5th Bombardment Wing and became part of the California Air National Guard. From 1951-1957, the 5th BW operated out of Kelly AFB, Texas. The wing then relocated to Yucaipa in 1957 and assumed its present name. The Yucaipa AFB gift history includes a number of donations from members of the military and civilian community. Some of these include a Humvee from 1946, an M1 Abrams tank from 1991, a Cessna 402A from 1984, a F-16 Fighting Falcon jet fighter aircraft from 1990, and an Apache helicopter from 2006.

Yucaipa, California is a small town in central California, located on the Yuba River. It was founded in 1868 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law, William Richardson. The name comes from the Yokai word "yuca" meaning "a kind of maize that grows wild in this area." At its peak, Yucaipa had a population of around 1,600 people.Today, the town has a population of just over 200 residents. The history of Yucaipa dates back to 1868 when John Sutter and his brother-in-law, William Richardson moved from Sacramento to start a new life in what is now Yucaipa County. They were pioneers who started the largest goldmining operation in western United States. Their company was known as the Sutter Californian Company and their mine was at Chico Canyon near present day Ukiah. In 1872 they founded another company called The Northern Pacific Railway Company which transported goods between Sacramento and Woodland before it became part of the Union Pacific Railroad system. Yucaipa soon became an important town because of its location on the river bank where goods could be unloaded and delivered to marketplaces all across Northern California. In 1916, during World War I, Yucaipa played host to one of history's largest air shows when American Airlines flew bombers over San Francisco Bay Bridge on their first promotional tour of America. Today's display case at Yucaipa Airport honors this event with an exhibit that features artifacts from that era including an American Airlines Boeing 707 airplane! During World War II many local businesses produced materials for military production such as munitions and automobiles but most notably they manufactured bread which aided in war efforts by providing nourishment for troops stationed throughout North America
Yucaipa, California was founded in 1849 by James P. Yucaipa and his wife, Maria. The town was named after the Yucaipa Valley in central California. In 1872, the land that now makes up Yucaipa was granted to John Sutter for his rancho adobe land grant. The first post office in Yucaipa opened in 1876. In 1905, a sawmill and grist mill were built on the site of present-day Redding. In 1912, a citrus grove and orchard were established within Yucaipa Village boundaries by Dr. George Culp of Redding. A cooperative grocery store and restaurant opened in 1918 within the village limits by Wm Henson & Bros., Inc.. In 1923, a hydroelectric power plant operated by the Southern Pacific Railroad was constructed within the village boundaries east of Main Street between San Joaquin River and Old Mill Creek. This plant provided electrical service for homes, businesses, schools and other needs within the village until it closed in 1978; however, some remnants of this facility can still be seen today hidden among tree roots at milepost 261 on Interstate 5 near Ranchero Dam; as well as at various sites along Old Mill Creek below San Joaquin River including at milepost 283 on I-5 just north of Wadsworth Dam where a small dam once stood; also see: References
