The United States Air Force has a rich history in Yucaipa, California. The first USAF presence in the area was during World War II when theAAF established an airfield at Pajaro River Naval Air Station. In 1948, Yucaipa became home to the Tactical Air Command (TAC) and then later U.S. Strategic Air Command (USSTRATCOM). Aircraft from both TAC and STRATCOM were used in support of Operation Downfall, which led to the war’s defeat. In 1968, Yucaipa AFB was reopened as a subordinate unit of Andersen AFB, Guam after being closed for six months due to budget cuts. Since its opening, Yucaipa AFB has been host to many different types of aircraft and missions. Today it is one of the most important USAF installations in California with over 20% of all USAF activity here. Aircraft operations include: bomber squadronrons; fighter squadronrons; helicopter squadronrons; electronic warfare squadrons; reconnaissance squadronrons; and Specialty Units such as Earth observation Squadron-19 (EOS-19), airborne warning and control system squadron-2 (AWACS-2), fire control radar maintenance detachment detachment 1 (FCRMD1), intelligence gathering radar maintenance detachment 2 (IGRMD2), weapons systems installation 3d group 9th Wing (WG9) and nuclear weapons installation 5th Group 12th Wing (WG12). Airport authorities have worked hard to keep the airport open while maintaining infrastructure that allows for growth in future years including new runways, terminals, parking garages and more. Yucaipa is located in Inyo County, California. The population was 3,567 at the 2010 census. Yucaipa is a small town that has been growing for over 100 years. It is known for its wine production and wineries. The first Europeans to visit Yucaipa were Spanish traders in the 16th century. Father Francisco Xavier Cabrillo sighted the peninsula from Cape Mendocino on October 14, 1542 while sailing from San Diego to Monterey Bay. He named it after Saint Joseph’s Chapel (the chapel now known as Mission San José) in Gasquito on the Peninsula of Baja California because of its resemblance to this structure. In 1875, Yucaipa became part of Inyo County when it was created from part of Mono County. In 1902, the post office was moved from Grantsville to Yucaipa and changed its name to Ulysses S. Grant Post Office. On July 24, 1918, Yucaipa incorporated as a village under the name Grantville which lasted until 1924 when it changed again to Ulysses S Grant Village under charter granted by Governor Hiram Johnson Jr.. On December 12, 1928 an act was passed by the state legislature authorizing development of a large retail center within one mile (1 km) of downtown Yucaipa with plans for 1 million sq ft (9300 m2) floor area including three stores and 50 restaurants On January 5, 1932 Mayor John Ahern announced that local officials had reached an agreement with Eastern Pacific Railroad Company subsidiary Southern Pacific Railway Company for passenger service between Ulysses S Grant Plaza and White Sands Depot using locomotives hauling freight cars operated by Southern Pacific Railway Company through downtown streetscape

The city of Yucaipa, California was founded in 1879 by several pioneers. The first post office in the town was established in 1881. In 1903, the city was renamed after José Francisco Yucaipa, a Chilean general who fought in the Mexican-American War. Yucaipa became an agricultural and ranching center during the early 20th century. The population of the town peaked at around 10,000 people in 1926 but declined to 7,000 by 1940. The downtown area of Yucaipa experienced significant redevelopment beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s; this included the construction of several large shopping malls and new residential developments. By 2000, however, Yucaipa's downtown had largely disappeared and its remaining commercial buildings had been demolished. Today, few residents remain in Yucaipa and its downtown areas have been vacant for many years.
After a series of fires in Yucaipa, California in 1871, the town was founded as an agricultural community by Mormons. The first post office opened in 1872. In 1896, the town was annexed by San Francisco.
