Yucaipa is a community located in San Joaquin County, California. It was first settled by the Native Americans in 1776 as part of the Rancho Yucaipa Mexican land grant. The town was founded on December 7, 1879 by Ezra Sallis and others from nearby Concord. Its name comes from the Yaqui word yucca which means "to clear." The community had a population of about 100 residents when it was incorporated as a town in 1905. In 1957, it became an unincorporated census-designated place (CDP). In 2000, it had a population of 463. The Town of Yucaipa is located on the southern edge of San Joaquin County within east-central Fresno County and is bordered to the north by Butte Creek and to the south by Eureka Valley between Tehachapi Mountains and Kern River National Forest. According to the USGS Mineral report for 2018, there are over 2,000 mineral sites within Yucaipa boundaries including: coal (urchin coal), uranium ore, gold asteroids, silver asteroids, lead meteoroids, rare earth elements (REEs), silicon dioxide (SiO2), germanium arsenide (GAs), copper minerals and more. In 1879 Ezra Sallis organized what would later become known as "the Pioneer Fathers" who were some of the first white men to settle in what would become known as rural San Joaquin County around present day Yucaipa Valley.
