In 1914, Yucaipa residents voted to become an Indian reservations after World War I ended and the army vacated their barracks on Grant Street. The United StatesArmy has a long and rich history in Yucaipa, California. The first U.S. Army troops were stationed here in 1846 during the Mexican-American War. It wasn't until 1898 that the United States again sent troops to fight in the Spanish-American War. In 1919, Yucaipa was chosen as the site for the new San Francisco General Hospital. The hospital would serve as a base of operations for many years before its move to Oakland, California, in 1949. The army also established a Technical School here in 1917 which continued operation until it closed in 1970. During World War II, Yucaipa was home to Camp Goodwin which housed thousands of American soldiers who served in Europe and Asia. After the war, Yucaipa became an important center for agriculture and industry with numerous companies operating here such as Alcoa Aluminum Company and ICM Consultants Incorporated (now known as Siemens).
Yucaipa, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It is located on the Yuba River and lies about 31 miles northeast of Sacramento. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. As one of the most rural communities in Kings County, Yucaipa has developed into a Bluegrass Capital of California with many short-stop gigs by country artists like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. With its irrigated farmland, rolling hills and pristine lakes, Yucaipa offers plenty to do including hiking and biking trails, swimming in crystal clear lakes or fishing for catfish at Black Hawk Lake. The attractive buildings from the early 20th century include a lumber mill and an old schoolhouse that are now used as apartments or offices. The community began to form around 1854 when John Sutter discovered gold near present-day Yucaipa while prospecting for his new rancho grant. A store was built soon after and cattle were milking cows on nearby ranches until railroads reached Yucaipa in 1868. The first post office opened in 1870; it closed three years later because of malaria epidemics that killed large numbers of people in central California. In 1876 John Doma organized what became known as "The Mormon Battalion" which helped found Salt Lake City after their flight from Nauvoo, Illinois during the American Civil War. Many members of The Mormon Battalion ended up living in central California including John Doma who founded Yucaipa with his brother David Hurok along with 41 other pioneers on October 9th, 1879; it was officially incorporated as a town on December 4th following ratification by the Kings County Board of Supervisors A sawmill operated by Hiram Mudge started production here beginning operations on November 10th1881; it continued until 1909 before going out of business due to competition from more efficient mills northward.
