The first coffee beans were grown in Yucaipa, California in 1867. The town was founded by Captain John Sutter and his family as a ranching community. In 1886, the first grocery store opened in Yucaipa and became one of the most important stores in the area. The town started to grow rapidly and by 1912 there were over 100 businesses in Yucaipa. The population of Yucaipa reached 5,000 by 1918. By the early 1920s, Yucaipa had become an important transportation hub for the area due to its location on State Route 41. In 1924, the original water tower was built and remains an important landmark in the town today.
Yucaipa is a small town located in the Mojave Desert of southern California. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and is adjacent to Palm Springs and Cathedral City. The townsite was developed in 1887 by John A. Yucaipa as an agricultural community on the east side of Mount Whitney, about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Palm Springs. Yucaipa grew rapidly during World War II as military personnel and their families moved into the area to escape air-raids and other attacks on Southern California. In 1949, Yucaipa became an incorporated city with a mayor and two council members; it remained one until 1990 when it lost its charter due to its lack of annexation by other cities or towns within Los Angeles County. By the late 1990s, however, artisan coffee had become an underground movement with limited distribution and high costs.
Yucaipa, California is a small town in southern Kern County, California. With a population of around 1,500 people as of the 2010 census,[1] it is the smallest municipality in Kern County and one of the most rural areas in the state. Yucaipa's history can be traced back to 1853 when Felipe de Arriaga founded the rancho San Francisco y Yucaipa (later known as Rancho Yucaipa) on land that now forms part of the city of Yucaipa. The first post office was established at Ajo Creek in 1854. In 1870, George Winton built a sawmill on what is now Hwy 99 south of town. In 1876, J.P. Morgan invested $10,000 into the mill and it became one of the largest mills in Southern California at that time.[2][3] The arrival of railroad transportation changed everything for Yucaipa; within 10 years lumber had become an important commodity and its downtown area grew rapidly with businesses such as banks, hotels and theaters opening up along Hwy 99A (now I-5). By 1907 there were over 20 businesses operating in downtown Yucaipa with more than 100 employees[4]. In 1915 Charles Sutter bought Rancho San Francisco from Arriaga and developed it into one of Kern County's most successful citrus growing regions[5][6]. Sutter also built several large new homes near downtown Yucaipa which remain popular today among locals and tourists alike for their architecture and stunning views. In 1938 Don Owens purchased Rancho San Francisco from Sutter and continued to develop it into one of Northern California's leading vineyards[7]. Today Don Owens Winery produces some iconic wines like Zinfandel, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot made from fruit grown on his properties including Yarra Valley Vineyard which he co-founded with his wife Rita Lee Owens in 1976[8].

In 1848, California became a United States territory, and Yucaipa Countywas established as part of it. In 1861, the county seat was moved from Dominguez Hills to Sacramento. In 1872, Yucaipa became a city and the name changed to Sacramento. OnJanuary 1, 1959, Sacramento merged with Alameda County to form California's third largest county by population.
