The first permanent settler in Yucaipa was Manuel Antonio Sanchez, who arrived in 1847. In 1851, Juan Francisco Lopez and his wife Pascual came to the area and started a farm. The first school in the area was built on this property in 1857. In 1861, Yucaipa became part of California and Soon after it had its own government. In 1865, there were three stores in town: one owned by J.F. Liles and two by Wm Fenton & Co.. One of these stores burned down within a year but left an embryonic community that would continue to grow until the 1950s when most of the buildings were destroyed by fire or damage from earthquakes
