Yucaipa, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,907 at the 2010 census. It is located about 20 miles east of Bakersfield and 30 miles north of Fresno. Yucaipa is part of the Greater Bakersfield Area. The area now known as Yucaipa was first populated by the Costilla people in 1776. They were forced from their land by the Mexican government and moved to what is now Orange County. In 1835, Yucaipa became a part of Kern County when it was created from parts of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. The original name for the town was Umpqua Creek settlement but it changed to Yucaipa in 1868 because there wasn't enough water available near Umpqua Creek for settlers to use effectively as an appellation. The town's post office opened in 1875 and remained open until 1959. The town has had several different roofs over its history including one in 1884 which burned down due to a fire set by a local boy while playing with matches outside his home; another roof occurred during World War II when Japanese American soldiers were interned here; and finally, during the early 1960s through 1970s an asphalt-tile roof lasting only six months replaced much older wooden ones that had become brittle due to salt spray exposure from nearby mountainsides. A new $10 million dollar courthouse and jail project began in 2006 with construction starting onsite in 2007 but halted after two years due to lack of funding behind then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's Proposal For A New Taxpayer funded Jail Overhaul - which would have placed all new jails within 25 miles of major metropolitan areas instead Of Within 75 Miles Of Any Economic Zone! This left our once beautiful Town With ONLY One Sheriff And One Jail Which Were More Likely To Cause Additional Problems Than Help Our Communities!
Yucaipa, California is located in the Central Coast of California and is part of theunion of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The county was created on March 13, 1853 from parts of San Diego County and Orange County. Yucaipa was first named "Hurtado" after José Hernando Hurtado y Pacheco, a Spanish explorer who explored this area in 1776. The name was changed to "Yucaipa" on November 10th, 1872 by order of Governor Manuel Micheltorena due to its resemblance to the Mexican word for "jungle". The first post office at Yucaipa opened on October 15th, 1881. The population of Yucaipa reached 2,500 in 1910 but declined over the next decade as most residents left for other areas in central California due to economic depression. In 1920 the population increased again when a small bridge was built over Indian Creek which connected Yucaipa with nearby Corona Heights. In recent years there has been an increase in development along Indian Creek as new businesses have moved into town including a number of restaurants and bars along with new housing developments that are strip malls with large parking lots.
