The town of Yucaipa, California is located in Kern County on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley. It was founded in 1868 by George C. Yucaipa and his wife Julia Boggs, who were both from New York City. The name comes from a Native American word meaning "place where two rivers meet." Yucaipa's economy changed significantly after World War II when the United States military established a air base here to supply bombers during the Korean War. The town also became known for its citrus crops, which gave it a significant tourist industry until the late 1990s. In recent years, Yucaipa has become more popular as a bedroom community for northwest Los Angeles County. Today, Yucaipa is one of the most vibrant small towns in California with an active community culture and rich history dating back to its founding days. In 1849, Yucaipa was founded by two brothers, George and John Yucaipa. The first post office in the town was established in 1855. In 1865, a sawmill was built on the banks of the Sacramento River. In 1868, a telephone line was built from Yucaipa to Redding. In 1870, a flour mill and gristmill were also constructed in Yucaipa. A blacksmith shop and wagon dealership were also opened in Yucaipa in 1872. The first school in the town was operated by Mrs. Cagle until it moved to Redding in 1889. In 1903, Yucaipa became an incorporated city with a population of 20 residents. The first mayor of Yucaipa was Wm Halsey Potter Jr.. In 1916, Prohibition came into effect in California and businesses began to close within days of its implementation statewide. Businesses closed even more quickly after prohibition being repealed six months later than it had been implemented originally due to increased taxes associated with its enforcement range from 3% to 25%. The Post Office building at 7th Street and Broadway burned down on October 15th, 1942 which caused $1 million worth of damage that took over three years to repair including replacing all the windowsills, door sills and baseboarding as well as rebuilding both floors of the building according to original plans. Yucaipa experienced another fire on January 9th and 10th 1922 which burned down all but one room (the kitchen) of the old Masonic Temple at Second Street & Broadway. After years of protest by citizens led by Mayor Potter Sr., on November 6th 1923 voters passed Proposition 2 which required any new business opening within city limits must be registered with the city government not less than 24 hours before starting operations; this law remained effective until City Hall moved from Main Street into its current location at Seventh Street & Broadway on May 1st 1975.On November 6 1923 Proposition 2 went into effect[https://www2s5g4db0c9b8e751010000500000/california-politics#propositions]] Yucaipa's main thoroughfare since incorporation has been Third Street running east–west between Main Street and Seventh Avenue.
