The National Guard of Yucaipa, California was established on December 12, 1959 as a result of the Mexican-American War. The organization has grown over the years and now includes over 6,000 active duty and reserve members. The Guard is responsible for providing law enforcement and security in the community through its patrol squads, emergency response teams, ceremonial units and military support functions. In addition to its service to the community, the Guard also provides a sense of community spirit by providing entertainment, education and fundraiser events throughout the year. The history of the National Guard began with two detachments that served in various capacities in Yucaipa during World War II. On November 25th, 1942 both detachments were activated under Lieutenant Colonel Harry Hines as part of General Order No. 109 which called for all men who had been drafted into military service since Pearl Harbor to report at their local posts within 72 hours. In 1949 (), following passage of Public Law 505 which authorized formation of state militias across California (), both detachments were reorganized as companies within Yucaipa County Militia District #1 (). At this time each detachment had an enlisted complement totaling around 100 men with no officers present. On November 1st 1951 ()the company headquarters moved from downtown Yucaipa to what is now known as Elmira Hall on North Main Street (). This new location allowed for better coordination between different squadrons and unit commanders as well as easier communication with adjacent counties (Calaveras County) which experienced rapid growth during this time period due to opening of Interstate 5 . A detachment was deployed to assist in suppressing a civil disobedience demonstration led by Drs. Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta on December 15th 1951 at San Francisco State University . The event resulted in several arrests including that of Captain Roger Ayerbach who leading one squadron responded with gunfire from his horseback onto peaceful demonstrators before being captured by police forces; he would be tried later that same year after spending 2 years incarcerated . A detachment was also mobilized on January 8th 1952 when citizens noted a large number of Armed Forces personnel parked along Highway 99 outside town limits obstructing traffic . After some initial confusion members quickly realized they were not dealing with enemy troops but unarmed civilian observers hired by defense contractor Lockheed Martin Company working oncontracts with Departmentof Defense . As soon as it became clear these individuals were not affiliated wit hthe Enemy they dispersed without incident .. A detachment battalion arrived in Yucaipa on October 14th 1953 calling for volunteers from surrounding communities to help provide security for Santa Paula Polanco School District social festival which took place at fairgrounds located just east off US 101 south near mile marker 128
