The first people to live here were the Mono family, who built a small community on the slopes of Mount Whitney in 1879. They were followed by the Humboldt and Partridge families. The first major development in Yucca Valley was the construction of an irrigation canal in 1911. This canal allowed farmers to bring water from Owens Valley into Yucca Valley, where it was used to cultivate crops like wheat and barley. In 1949, two brothers named Gordon and Clark decided to open a gas station/restaurant called Gordon’s Place in nearby Springdale. This served as a local landmark until it burned down in 1970. Despite this setback, Gordon’s Place continued to serve as a popular spot for locals and tourists until it too burned down in 2000. Today, only a few pieces of evidence remain of what once stood at Gordon’s Place – most notably a large gasoline drum that can still be seen inside the restaurant now known as The Tank House Bar & Grill).
