Yucca Valley, California is located in the Inyo County of Southern California. It is bordered by Mono Lake to the east, and Joshua Tree National Park to the west. The valley was named for Yucca Mountain, which is located in the nearby mountain range that makes up much of the eastern edge of the valley. The mountain ranges separate Yucca Valley from Bisbee and other towns in Inyo County. The town of Yucca City was founded in 1892 as a result of an agreement between Grant Rahl and J.P. Morgan. The city became a ghost town after it was abandoned by miners in 1907 because of high costs associated with mining operations in what is now Yucca Valley. However, other towns began to grow up around Yucca City over time, including Happy Camp (1914), White Sands (1924), and Black Rock (1928). The first water available for irrigation came into use in 1922 when construction began on the San Joaquin River Water Project. This project ended up providing more water than any other single endeavor during World War II, helping to drive down water prices throughout southern California. Today, Yucca Valley still relies heavily on groundwater resources due to its location within an agricultural area that experiences high levels of rainfall year-round

Yucca Valley is located in the Inyo County of California, about an hour and a half east of Los Angeles. It was settled by Mormon pioneers in the early 1800s, and became a cattle-ranching center during the 19th century. The valley was named for Yucca Hill, one of several small hills in its vicinity. In 1872, prospectors discovered oil reserves in Yucca Valley and began to drill into the earth for oil. By 1911, production had increased enough to warrant a drilling rig on top of Cerro Gordo Peak, which provided excellent access to natural gas resources. The peak production years were 1925-1927; however, because of laissez faire economics at that time, prices declined thereafter and productivity decreased. In 1973-1974 Chevron Corporation drilled two rigs into the Shiels well known as “The Well That Never Was” due to high water levels inside the well caused by floods from winter rainsstorms along Mono Lake (the surface water body). After oil prices stabilized following this drilling IOPP activity recommenced but with lower yields due to depletion2), until 1984 when major discoveries were made at Anaconda Field3) including large gas reservoirs4) as well as other minerals5). Today Yucca Valley is still a petroleum production center with significant undeveloped resources remaining; it has been classified as an “arcology” seismic zone6) which means there are significant amounts of energy locked up within these rocks7).

The Yucca Valley area, located in the eastern Mojave Desert of California, was first populated by Native Americans. The name Yucca comes from the Chukchi word yaksa-kooli meaning "dry place." The area was first explored by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and his party on November 7, 1542. The first permanent residents of the valley were Junipero Serra and his party in 1777. By 1853, the population of Yucca Valley had grown to over 10,000 people. However, it would not be until after World War II that the valley would become a major center for production of natural gas in California.
