Yucca Valley is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located north of Bakersfield and east of Visalia on the Kern River. In 1851, they built a fort to defend their land against Indian attacks and named it Fort Yuma after Mexican war general José Antonio de la Peña y Duran. The fort was abandoned in 1862 and its garrison moved to New Mexico Colony. In 1865, James Fenton discovered coal seams near Yucca Valley and started mining for ore there in 1870. By 1878, he had developed a major mine with shafts up to 90 feet deep that yielded about 20 million tons of coal each year. After his death in 1888, his son-in-law Halsey Aspinwall took over the operation and ran it until 1916 when it was sold to The Alcoa Company for $1 million dollars ($ as of 2019). During World War II, Yucca Valley became an important munitions production site because of its location near Bakersfield on the Kern River Delta where aluminum canning plants were established during World War II. Copper mines were also operated here but closed down during the early 21st century due to economic reasons; however they remain visible from nearby areas such as Bastrop or Clovis Hills through Google Earth views available online). In 1863, local entrepreneur Waddell gave up his interest in the mines and moved back eastward into California after finding no further ore potential west of Sacramento City Creek. He renamed his operation "Waddell & Co." Thereafter, other miners followed suit and production quickly increased as more people ventured into Yucca Valley to search for gold. During World War II, many American soldiers passed through Yucca Valley on their way north to fight in Europe; some even stayed overnight at Waddell &Co.'s ranches while they searched for minerals near Reno or Tonopah Junction along Interstate 80 (now known as State Route 95). Today, YuccaValley remains an impoverished corner of Central California where most residents are employed within agriculture or mining operations outside the valley itself
