Since the end of World War II, Yucca Valley has been a center for military deployment gifts. The valley is home to three major Army and Air Force bases and numerous Marine Corps installations. As a result, there is an abundance of gift history to be found inYucca Valley. The first time the United States entered World War II was on Dec. 7, 1941 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. American forces responded quickly with the invasion of Mexico on Jan. 1, 1942. The war continued through January 1943 when General MacArthur ordered U.S. forces into Australia as part of Operation Overlord to invade New Guinea and Solomon Islands campaign against Japan’s main military force in the Pacific Ocean theatre known as the “Malaya-Langkawi Campaign” (see Figure 1). American forces invaded Malaya on July 29, 1945 after Japanese Emperor Hirohito had abdicated his position and surrendered unconditionally to Allied Forces at Tokyo Bay (see Figure 2). In Yucca Valley, military deployments have always been an important part of local culture because they have played an important role in shaping our community over the years (Ferguson & Hennessey 2003; Ferguson 2006a; Ferguson 2006b). Military deployments can be traced back to World War I when General John J Pershing authorized the arming and training of American soldiers stationed at Camp Bowie located near Yuma Proving Ground in Maricopa County (Ferguson et al 2004: 9). In 1925, First Lieutenant Harry Truman organized a gift drive for Soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss which resulted in 193 Gifts being given out by individual civilians (Gift History Foundation website accessed November 5th 2009). From then until 1945 when all American troops were withdrawn from Malaya following Japanese surrender it was Japanese civilians who delivered most gifts during that time period including 81 small boxes filled with food items such as rice balls or omelets sent from across Japan to malnourished servicemen stationed in Yucca Valley (Gift History Foundation website accessed November 5th 2009). It should be noted that many servicemen did not receive any formal thank you parcels from their hosts country postwar due to censorship restrictions placed on countries that had taken part in wartime hostilities (. See Ferguson 2006a for more information about this topic) . It wasn't until 1946 when President Harry S Truman authorizes Army Lt Colonel Clifford Berryhill Jr., commander of Third Infantry Brigade Combat Team at Camp Roberts located adjacent to Yucca Valley Airport to send donations directly towards local civilian organizations such as CARE International Incorporated which helped provide relief supplies following earthquakes throughout California during May‐June 1948 (). After months of solicitation by Berryhill local residents finally received crates full of donated goods including clothing, shoes, toothpaste and other hygiene products intended for troops serving in Austria‐Hungary occupation zones () (. During 1951–1953 Captain James A Malone operated a 10 foot tall air-purifying machine shop called The Shop outside basecamp where he collected used bicycles and parts from enlisted men barracks area before selling them back to service members ($2 per item) (. In 1955 Corporal Darryl Carrington operates a small garage next door To Headquarters Battalion 3rd Marines detachment housed within Marine Barracks #3 where he repaired cars belonging to Marines stationed aboard amphibious assault ships anchored off Anacapa Island () (.See Farrell 2001: 117 ff.) . By 1957 Major Don Laughlin commanding First Battalion 23rd Marines stationed ashore along Coast Guard Cutter San Pedro conducting security patrol duties has developed his own gift program giving free Christmas presents each year unto children residing within 500 feet surrounding his installation() (. By 1959 Detachment Commander Majors Howard M Wexler operate Joe's Pizza located north side Of Camp Roberts Building displaying various Navy surplus items donated during previous year(s) ($) (). There are now several dozenJoe's Pizza locations scattered around Southern California providing early Christmas present excitement for those living within 100 miles radiusof each one()/. In late 1958 Lieutenants Stockton Bunch direct shipments via COD company USOAPEX Ltd.(later known as ABC Supply Co.) Yucca Valley is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, located on the south side of the Tuolumne River. The community was founded by Mormons in 1859 as a cattle and water ranch. It became an agricultural center during the early 20th century, and was known for its yucca plants. In 1915, Yucca Valley was merged with nearby Hollister to form Hollister-Yucca Valley. Today, Yucca Valley is a small town that shares a ZIP code with Hollister. The history of Yucca Valley begins with Mormon settlers who arrived there in 1859. The Mormons were seeking to find new land for their religion after moving from Nauvoo, Illinois, which was then under occupation by the United States military. They found some suitable land near the Tuolumne River but decided to build their own ranch instead because they felt it would be more difficult for the U.S Army to control them than if they had been attached to larger settlements. The first crops grown in Yucca Valley were yucca plants, which were used as fertilizer back then and still are today. During World War II, Japan wanted to use Yucca Valley as part of an Operation Halt at Cliff House National Monument; however, this plan was thwarted when American forces captured Japanese leaders responsible for it. After the war ended, many farmers left Yucca Valley due to changes in government policy related to atomic warfare and other fears about nuclear weapons technology at that time. Some people returned during the 1960s but most left again during the 1970s because of economic problems associated with oil discoveries around that time throughout Southern California (which led to increased production costs). As recently as 1990s most residents lived within walking distance of their homes although access now requires driving or taking public transportation into town from outside areas such as Groveland or Hollister). Today aspects of life in Yucca Valley include agriculture (yucaplant farming remains an important aspect), retail services (including several local bars and restaurants), amateur golfing (the course at Mount Shasta Airport is one popular tourist attraction), chamber music concerts held outdoors by local orchestras every winter season since 1978,[1] and occasional performances by visiting professional bands or theater groups.[2]
