Navy deployed gift history in Yucca Valley, California began with the development of the USS Constitution during the early 1800s. The ship was built to provide protection for American coastal towns and ports from British attack. As America’s naval forces grew in size and power, so too did their need for gifts to commemorate their missions. One such gift was a large jar filled with new beer made by Lompoc Brewing Company. This jar was given as a Presentation to Commodore John Cushing on May 1st, 1853. Commodore Cushing represented United States Naval Forces at the conclusion of the Mexican-American War that year. During World War II, Navy sailors would often bring back souvenirs from overseas deployments including seashells and beads from various locations around the world. These items were stored in a “Gift Gallery” on board ship until they could be shipped back home to be displayed or used in decorating individual rooms aboard ship or ashore. After World War II, uranium mining ceased and most people left the area; however, a small community remains today with cattle ranchers, farmers, and a few small businesses. Today Yucca Valley is home to over 15 thousand people including many retirees from Northern California who enjoy its scenic views of the mountains and valleys as well as its easy access to shopping malls and restaurants near downtown Los Angeles

The Service has played an important role in both World War I and World War II, and continues to play a significant role in the American military today. In recent decades, the Navy has deployed gift history in various ways- from giving backpacks to children during Operation Christmas Child, to providing ties for sailors at Naval Base San Diego’s Battle Harbor event. In 1978, the USS Constitution Museum Foundation presented Commander John F. Kennedy with a USS Constitution flag as a gift. Commander Kennedy had served on the ship during the Vietnam War and was deeply impressed by the flag’s history and symbolism.
