The United States Naval Academy (USNA) was founded in 1802 as an organization for cadets of the new U.S. Navy. In 1912, the Academy became a military school and, in 1916, it became a navy college. The USNA has graduated more admirals and generals than any other university or institution of higher learning in the United States. Yucca Valley is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, located about 20 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. The population was 7,883 at the 2010 census. Yucca Valley is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1881 by John Wesley Hance and his wife, Mary Ann (née White). The first post office opened in 1882. In 1902, the name of the town changed from Willow Grove to Yucca Valley after nearby Yucaipa Caverns were discovered rich with natural gas and other minerals. In 1905, a millrace connecting Yucca Creek and the Kern River was built and became known as "the artery" for transportation within Yucca Valley. A water tower also began to be erected in 1907.Yucca Valley's economy grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to bomber training facilities within the nearby cities of Indio and Riverside. Many businesses were established inYucca Valley during this time including two grocery stores, two hardware stores, two banks, three post offices and six churches. The war ended with World War II and many businesses closed down but new ones were born such as four restaurants which continue today as locally owned businesses called "The Grapes". In 1957–58, a shopping center was constructed on Indian Wells Boulevard in Yucca Valley which served as an important center for local shopping until it closed down in 1992 after being damaged by fire; however several remnants remain today such as clothing racks from that era still standing outside of one store inside the mall complex still functionsToday! In late 2006 it was announced that major development would take place near Yucca Valleys high school called Dreamland which will include 2 theme parks - one with roller coasters/golf courses etc., another all-terrain park complete with a zip line!
