The Arvada Air Force Base is home to the Colorado Springs-based 9th Wing, which is responsible for the training and arming of air forces around the state. The base was established in 1948 as a result of an agreement between the United States and Great Britain. It has since grown to include more than 60 acres of land, including an airfield, a runway research center, and two radars. In 1969, the United States military began providing funding for the creation of what would eventually become known as Colorado Springs-based Air National Guard Station Arvada. At that time, it was one of only a few ANG stations in North America. Since then, CSAS Arvada has been host to detachments from both NATO and partner nations throughout Europe; Asia Pacific; and Latin America. Today’s Air National Guard station provides vital support to local law enforcement agencies by providing aerial refueling and emergency medical services. Additionally, it houses various headquarters units such as the Operations Division Directorate III (Air Support), Headquarters Squadron (HSS) 388th Airlift Wing/United States Army Reserve 136th Airlift Squadron (USAR), Headquarters Element 1st Brigade Combat Team/Army National Guard 5th Infantry Division (Airmen from CH-47 Chinook helicopter squadron.) In addition to its many functions withinColorado Springs-area airspace, CSASArvada also serves as a staging ground for military operations in other parts of Colorado County through joint interceptor flights with other county agencies
