Arvada (pronounced ah-verdah) is a town in Eagle County, Colorado, United States. The population was 11,921 at the 2000 census. The name comes from the French word "arre" meaning "mountain." Arvada was organized in 1876 and named for General David B. Arvida who fought in the Mexican–American War as an officer of Company C, Second Denver Infantry Regiment. Arvada is located on the eastern edge of Eagle County and includes portions of Aspen and Englewood neighborhoods. According to the 2010 census, the population was 12,898. It is part of Inter-City Airport Regional District No. 2 which covers all or parts of Aurora, Commerce City, Golden Valley Junction, Greenwood Village, Mesa Verde National Park and Rifle Range during daylight hours only. The first settler in what would become Arvada arrived by wagon train from Kansas on December 17th 1876. They were Majestic Hired Hand Jephson's party with about 30 men under his command including 10 Native Americans led by Chief Joseph La Salle (first permanent European settler). On January 9th 1877 Captured five Mexicans working for Pikes Peak Land & Mining Co., ranch hands John Armstrong (alias Black Jack), Hiram Queenan alias White Legs and George Patton were arrested while mining near present day Englewood Boulevard and Ute Creek Road east of downtown Arvada. Captain Wm Aiken ordered them shot after they surrendered without any fight Aspens growth began soon thereafter when businessman Edward Stratton purchased land east of downtown from Pikes Peak Land & Mining Co.. He set up business as TheStratton Mines Ltd., selling coal and ore until 1893 when he sold his interest to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who ran it as Wadsworth Mines Incorporated until 1958 when it became Lone Peak Coal Corp.. In 1912 James Irvine established Irvine Rancho west side of city limits now home to Aspen Highlands ski resort . By 1914 there were over 200 residences within city limits with a school serving grades K-12 along With many businesses including: Weaver’s Clothing store; McCoy’s hardware store; First National Bank; Masonic Lodge #527; Presbyterian Church #1; Harry Rosenlaw’s grocery store In 1916 Anaconda Copper mine opened , providing muchneeded revenue to support burgeoning town but production ceased due to darkness falling early each day . After some debate at City Council meeting regarding annexation into neighboring Mesa Verde National Park by nearby Douglas County another vote resulted in incorporation into Mesa Verde Municipal District #2 effective July 1st 1916 renamed "Arvada" . But even though incorporated into district no services were provided .. finally annexation occurred effective September 15th 1946 becoming part ofDouglas County
