The Marines of the Arvada-based 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment have been deployed multiple times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan. The battalion's history dates back to World War II when it was organized as a battalion Landing Craft Infantry (LCI) unit. In the Vietnam War, the battalion served as part of the 1st Marine Division during Operation Rolling Thunder and Battle for Saigon. Following the war, the battalion returned to Arvada in 1969 as a mechanized infantry unit that became an assault rifle company in 1986. Currently, 2/5 is assigned to Camp Pendleton on San Diego County's west coast and has been deployments to Okinawa Prefecture in Japan since 2006. In 2007, 2/5 Marines were among over 100 U.S.-led coalition troops who took part in Bastion Point exercise off of Guam. This year saw another deployment with 4/4 Marines participating in Exercise "Hornet" off Bahrain which included exercises at sea and ashore near Kuwait City. In all these deployments, marines have used their skills and training to help keep our allies safe while they deal with troubled times aroundthe world.

Arvada, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 5,849 as of the 2010 census. Arvada is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is adjacent to Golden and Fort Collins. The first European settlers in what is now Arvada were French Canadians who arrived in 1814. The first post office was established in 1820 and the first school was opened in 1827. The name Arvada comes from an old Ute word meaning "the sharp end of a rock." In 1876, gold was discovered at Butte Creek near present day Aspen and soon people began to pour into Arvada for the new discovery. By 1912, it had become one of the most important mining towns in Colorado because of its abundant gold deposits. The 1950s saw an increase in social activism among young people throughout America which led to political more openness within society as well as significant advances across fields such as education and women’s rights during this time period. This growth spurt continued through most of the 1960s until dramatic decreases began appearing after Nixon’s landslide win over Hubert Humphrey in 1972 which signaled an end to any hope for progressivism or change despite subsequent movements like Occupy Wall Street which continue up until today with very different results across regions around America!
