Arvada, Colorado is home to the Arvada Air Force Base, one of the most active military bases in the United States. The base has been a vital part of American society for over seventy years and has played an important role in numerous wars. It is also home to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, which was once one of America's leading weapons manufacturers. Today, the arsenal produces precision munitions and other advanced weaponry. The Arvada Air Force Base was established on October 1st, 1912 as a branch of the Colorado National Guard. On July 24th, 1916, it became an independent air force station under General John J. Pershing's command. The first planes were flown from Arvada Air Force Base on December 10th, 1916. The base was redesignated as an air force station on November 3rd, 1948 by General Douglas MacArthur following his victory in World War II. In 1959-1960 the original runways were replaced with new ones that are still used today. In 1958-1959 Lockheed Aircraft Corporation bought out General Motors' share in Rocky Mountain Arsenal for $3 million dollars which created what is now Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company (LMA). LMA produced military helicopters and flew them into combat during Vietnam War and later Operation Desert Storm against Iraq in 1990-1991. The company also manufactures fighter jets such as F-16 Fighting Falcons and C-130 Hercules transport planes. Today there are more than 4500 people working at LMA across sixteen factories located in seventeen countries worldwide including USA, Canada, UK, France (Alenia Aermacchi), Italy ( Leonardo Smeraldi), Spain (EADS AstraZeneca), Denmark (Thales Alenia Space) and Australia (/Allan McNaught Laboratories/Australian Aerospace Industries Limited). Arvada, Colorado is a small town located in the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area. It is famous for its mountains and for the Arvada ski resort which is one of the most popular in North America. The population of Arvada was 6,651 at the 2010 census. The first people to settle in what is now Arvada were Native American. They built huts on high grounds near where the ski resort now stands and hunted game including deer, elk, and bear. The first post office was established in 1876. By 1899, there were over 100 residents living in Arvada. In 1911, a school was built and named after Mrs. Ayer Hennepin (1850-1914), who donated land to establish it. In 1928, an electric streetcar service began operation between downtown Denver and the ski resort; this made Arvada one of the first towns in Colorado to have a municipal electric system. The ski resort became one of North America's most popular tourist destinations during World War II because it offered access to top quality skiing while providing employment for local civilians as well as military personnel stationed at nearby Fort Carson Army Camps Park and tents used by troops on maneuvers outside of town served as living quarters during these wartime periods In 1969, when Aurora Municipal Airport opened adjacent to Fort Carson Army Camps Park, much attention turned from Ski Valley towards Auraria because this airport would provide access not only toski slopes but also to other forms of transportation such as air travel into downtown Denver via I-25 or I-70
