Arvada is a small town in Colorado, located in the south-central part of the state. The population was 6,088 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern edge of the Rocky Mountains and is bordered by Cheyenne County to the north, Arapaho County to the east, Douglas County to the southeast, and Gunnison County to the southwest. The community was named for General John Arvida (1810-1873), an American general who fought in Mexico and during its War of Independence. The Arvada post office opened in 1876. Arvada has a rich history that can be traced back to its early settlers. In 1872, J P Hickey settled here with his family after moving from eastern Colorado Springs. They built a log cabin and started farming land which they continued until 1896 when they sold their holdings to George C Ransom and others. In 1916, Arvada became incorporated as a village within Douglas County. It held this status until it was renamed Arvada Village in 1984 following a vote by residents. The first store in Arvada opened on Main Street in 1896; it closed about 10 years later due to lack of salesmanship by local merchants William Fenton and James Kappes. The first school open in Arvada was called "Mountain View" but it closed due to low enrollment before opening again as "Old West" School District #1 Schoolhouse on North First Street about 1912-1914 under teacher Mrs L B Weisbrodt (she also operated Old West Church). After World War I ended there were no new students so OldWest School District #2 reopened Schools Building at 1415 North First Street about 1919 as Howard Elementary School; this building housed both schools until 1990 when plans were made for renovation/better use of space inside HighSchool Center Blocks 1 & 2 which had been used as stores since 1914-1916 When Stonington Elementary moved from 1115 East Capitol Avenue intoBlocks 1 & 2 HighSchool Center circa1990 some equipment including desks, chalk boards etc went into storage inside old highschool center blocks 1 & 2

The village of Arvada was founded by prospectors after they discovered gold nuggets in 1859. It became an important transportation and manufacturing center due to its proximity to Leadville and Fort Collins. The first post office opened in 1875. In 1907, Arvada incorporated as a city with a population of 20,000 people. The city was named for James Arvida, who had purchased land east of the village for a rancho (farmstead). The downtown area has been extensively renovated since it was floodlit for the 2002 Winter Olympics; however, much of what once constituted Arvada's downtown still stands today - including many buildings dating back to 1914 which are now used as businesses or offices.
