The Aurora, Colorado Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1881. The original unit was organized as the 6th Infantry Regiment of Colorado Volunteer Militia and became the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment in 1887. The regiment was redesignated as the 1st Cavalry Regiment in 1911 and then again as the 1st battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment in 1917. In 1921, the regiment became an infantry brigade with headquarters at Fort Carson. In 1947, it was redesignated as the 4th Brigade Combat Team and moved to Ft Riley, Kansas where it remained until its move to Aurora in 1991. The army gift history of the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment began with a donation by Rufus Smeaton on November 5, 1881. Mr. Smeaton donated four rifles and two shotguns to be used by his own militia unit in Aurora for defense against possible Indian attacks. The rifles were given to Major John Gorman who planned on using them for mounted combat against Apache raiders during the American Civil War. However, due to funding shortages withinarma forces during that time period only five of MrSmeaton's rifles could be field-issued to Gorman's brigademen; however these weapons did see action during three engagements against Apache raiders from October 1861 through April 1862 under Colonel George Armstrong Custer’s command at Fort Laramie near present day Cheyenne Mountain Resort between March 25-April 2 1863 while also participating in Union cavalry operations around Dodge City resulting in one dead officer and six wounded soldiers including Majors Harney Griggs (5/6) of Company I(VI) US Volunteers killed at Dodge City on April 2 1863 along with Lieutenants James Hutton (2/11), Edward Everett Hale (1/8) and Alfred Pfeffer (3/15). In addition to their military service directed towards Native Americans, members of Company VI participated also in several local civic events such as holding a milk run on December 12 1884 from Arapaho Agency located east of town across Cherry Creek into Wheat Ridge Canyon snowmobile trails leading up alongside Cherry Creek which netted twenty eight cents per mile traveled which funded community projects including building schools new roads etc.; construction of a water tower erected by Aurora citizens on November 15 1886 when Colo Springs Municipal Water District opened its taps providing municipal services; Ladies Auxiliary No 3 serving refreshments for troops at various events throughoutDenver County Santa Fe Trail racecourse July 14 1899 being largest ever ladies auxiliary event staged utilizing tent camping facilities available for troops attending racecourse not unlike modern day NFL games or rock concerts today all this great military activity happening right smack dab downtown like people do today free speech is almost gone no more
