Aurora, Colorado is a small town in the western United States. It is located on the Uncompahgre Plateau and is bordered by Weld County to the south, Douglas County to the east, and Arapaho County to the north. As of the 2010 census, there were 4,958 people living in Aurora. The population has grown over time and according to the 2000 census, it was 5,574. The Aurora-Broomfield School District serves students in pre-K through 12th grade. In addition to school district services such as health care and utilities, Aurora also offers a variety of economic opportunities including: agriculture; construction; retail; real estate; manufacturing; tourism; and service industry businesses which provide goods or services that are not available within local schools or businesses. Aurora was founded in 1864 by Leland Stanford Jr., who financed the establishment of Stanford University. The town received its name from then-Governor John Evans Broomfield who named it for him because he had seen a beautiful mountain range while traveling through Colorado Territory. The first post office opened in 1865. By 1870, Aurora had grown so large that it became its own city with its own government and police force! In 1916, during World War I, Aurora became one of four American cities (the others being Denver, San Francisco and New York City) that accepted food stamps from President Woodrow Wilson's New Deal program as part of their social welfare efforts throughout America. In 1949 Auroras largest employer was Citizens National Bank which employed over 1,200 people at their two locations in downtown Aurora as well as an annex on State Street just east of Interstate 25 near Union Station. Withdrawn from business ownership after several years due to financial difficulties aurora’s last major employer was Gannett Paper Company which closed its facility inside what is now Philips Arena three years later in 1957 before finally closing down completely around 1970 when electric power became available for all local businesses regardless of size! During these years there were no banks or shopping centers present within walking distance either making life much harder than it already was for many residents trying to get by without some form of assistance! The end result has been an immense loss for both residents and municipality alike with little hope that anything will change anytime soon given how entrenched business elites have become within our community! currently only 8% (less than 2 out of every 10 total jobs) are generated within walking distance from most shops/banks so even if something did happen we would still be struggling <=10 jobs out of 100 can create taxable income should things improve
