Aurora, Colorado is a city located in Boulder County, Colorado. Aurora was founded in 1872 as the town of Richfield and became a county seat in 1902. The population of Aurora was 997 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Aurora was first inhabited by the Anasazi people, who built their villages near what is now Denver. In 1871, gold was discovered in Placerville and Richfield quickly became its leading mining town. In 1893, when the Denver-Aurora Railway arrived to traffic goods from Richfield toDenver-Aurora, Auroranselected themselves their own mayor and council. The city's first incorporation occurred on February 14th of that year with seventy five residents voting against incorporation because they felt it would not be practical to have an independent city government with its own police force and fire department.
