Aurora, Colorado is a town of over 60,000 people located on the western edge of the Rocky Mountains in Weld County. The town was founded in 1892 by banker Arthur W. Dennison and lumber baron James S. Aurora is a city in Colorado and the county seat of Benton County. The population was 27,827 at the 2010 census. Aurora is one of the most populous cities in Colorado. It has been the 7th largest city in Colorado since 2000 and the 2nd largest city east of Interstate 25 since 2002. The first people to live in what is now Aurora were Arapaho Indians who arrived on horseback from Mexico City around 1811. They built an improvised shelter near what is now downtown Aurora while they awaited news of their brother-in-law's safety back in Mexico City. Aurora was founded by Captains John Fetterman and David Hennepin on November 4, 1824 as a trading post on the Platte River between Fort Larimer and Black Hawk Canyon. The site later became known as Fetterman's Ferry Landing because Captain John Fetterman had authority over all river traffic between those two points. In 1829, Captain George Ziegler built a log cabin on land that would eventually become Aurora Savings & Loan building #1 which still stands today at First Avenue and State Street NW. He named it "Ziegler's Mill" after himself and his brother Jacob Ziegler (a German immigrant who also settled in Benton County). In 1830, he added a storeroom, barn, workshop, jail cell for local criminals, and located his mill further downriver alongpresent Day State Avenue from where it still stands today just north of I-25 exit 161B/C southbound lanes only accessible via ramps from I-25 going east or westbound Exit 161D/E southbound (the present day location of Dick's Drive).
