Aurora is a town in Jefferson County, Colorado, United States. The population was 11,821 at the 2010 census. Aurora was incorporated on December 15, 1898. Aurora's first post office opened in 1899. The name of the town comes from the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. The first white person to live in Aurora was John Fenton who arrived on July 5, 1872 with his family from Illinois. He built a cabin near what is now the corner of 8th and Arapahoe Streets. By 1902 there were twelve businesses in Aurora and nine residents. In 1907 the first electric streetcar service ran through Aurora and it soon became one of Denver's most important transportation arteries. In 1912 Charles Waddell founded Camp White Mesa which served as a summer home for soldiers during World War I while they were training at Fort Lyon outside of Denver; this camp later became known as White Mesa State Park after him and his wife Ida Belle Waddell donated land for it in 1923. On November 2nd 1917 Colorado Springs voters passed an ordinance creating Ward 4 within Jefferson County to provide more representation for African Americans living inColorado Springs proper; this ward would be named after Ida Belle Waddell's husband Charlie Green who also served as its first trustee On January 1st 1912 Charles Waddell founded "The Evening Bulletin" newspaper serving both Arnold Palmer golf tournaments that year along with other events taking place in downtown Colorado Springs including the Stampede Fairgrounds which had been converted into an arena by 1914 Aurora is located at (39° 52′ 54″ N, 104° 10′ 04″ W). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9 square miles (23 km²), all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 10,928 people, 3,898 households, and 3,051 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,636 people per square mile (623/km²). There were 4,,998 housing units at an average density of 779 per square mile (297/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White alone
