Aurora, Colorado is a town located in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. Aurora is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Aurora were Spanish missionaries in 1776. A group of Englishmen who had been exploring the Rocky Mountains came across the area in 1814 and named it after Auroras Borealis (Northern Lights) because they could see them only during winter months. The first settler in Aurora was John Hinton on May 2, 1875, when he bought land from Samuel Hill. On October 6 of that year, Hinton organized a company to build a road between Fort Bridger and Telluride but never finished it because of financial difficulties. In 1881 John D’Angelo built an sawmill and millrace near present day Thornton Boulevard and First Street east of downtown Aurora for his own small business which he ran until his death in 1907. In 1902 Major General George Armstrong Custer died while leading Company F of the 11th Cavalry Regiment over Mount Rushmore National Monument near Cedar Rapids, Iowa; this event became known as "Custer's Last Ride." This made Aurora one of the few towns in Colorado to have something directly related to World War I (the other being Lakewood). The city government decided to erect a memorial honorsing Custer at Jackson Park on November 10th, 1918 (). That same year also saw the opening of Central Avenue which ran from northeast corner of Main Street south to southwest corner just inside Mile High Airport boundaries; this artery served as commercial shopping and entertainment district for Aurora until 1984 when it was replaced by Interstate 25W. Aurora experienced its golden age starting around 1920 with many civic organizations and businesses being founded or upgraded including: Chamber Of Commerce (1920-1928), Rotary Club (1920s-1950s), American Legion Post #211 (1930s-1980s), City Hall Annex Corporation (1945-1974), First National Bank & Trust Company Building/Pitkin Plaza (1960s-1990s), Market Square Theatre District Inc./First Niagara Center/Lincoln Center Shopping mall Partnership/First Data Centers Partnership Incorporated(1991-) Others significant during this time include: USAF Base Elmendorf AFB (& adjacent areas)opened in 1957 (), Western Electric factory closed downin 1978 (), Tractors production facilities moved from Chatfield Township into downtown Aurora., Boeing Co.'s new plant opened up along Ironton Road in 1987 (), PepsiCo's new plant opened up along North Broadway just northwest of Olive Garden restaurant
