The U.S. Army stationed an artillery battalion in Brighton, Colorado during World War II. The battalion was redesignated as the 5th Brigade Artillery Regiment in 1951 and the regiment activated in 1957. The brigade was redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Division in 1969 and the division activated in 1975. The brigade was re-designated as the 7th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in 1990 andactivated at Fort Carson, Colorado. In 2002, the brigade became part of 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized) when it was realigned from 2nd Infantry Division (1st Cavalry).
Brighton, Colorado is a small town located in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 592 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Brighton-Anchorage, AK Micropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Brighton begins with settlers moving to this area in 1876. The first post office in the community was established in 1879. In 1912, a school was built and named after Mrs. Florence Ladd, an early settler and civic leader. In 1922, a library was also built in Brighton and served as the nucleus for many local libraries over the years. The economy of Brighton has been based on agriculture since its inception and processing plants have been located here throughout its history including Peet's Coffee Company (1934), Phelps Dodge Corporation (1980), and now Mitsubishi Motor Manufacturing Corporation (1996). A large agricultural center closed down due to competition from other locations in recent decades but revived when Mitsubishi set up production here again starting in 2005 with a new manufacturing plant known as "Mitsubishi" North America LLC which employs approximately 1,000 people directly or through subcontractors across several factories across five states; Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and New York City. In recent years there has been growth within the tech industry with companies such as Apple Inc., Google Inc., Microsoft Corp., Amazon Web Services Inc., Adobe Systems Incorporated and Facebook Zuckerburg Headquarters coming to town for research purposes or initial startup phase operations. There are also plans for development of mixed-use projects such as an airport terminal redevelopment project adjacent to Mount San Miguel Park that will include retail space along with hotel rooms; however no decisions have yet been made about these types of developments while planning continues
