Brighton, Colorado is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to arrive in this area were pioneers who founded Brighton in 1859. They were led by Daniel Prentiss and William Hays. In 1865, George Atherton came to town and started a grocery store. His store became one of the largest in the area and he helped start a school system here as well. Over time, other businesses began opening up here as well: a bank in 1887, an elevator company in 1904, and even a flour mill from 1916 until it closed down in 1978. In 1948, work started on building what would become known as "The Castle". This was an experimental nuclear reactor that was supposed to be used for peaceful purposes but it instead went wrong and exploded! The explosion caused extensive damage to the town which required reconstruction efforts that lasted for many years afterwards. The post-World War II era saw some growth here; things like leisure sports such as skiing or snowboarding started becoming popularized here so people could escape cold winters back home (which they did!). Over time though there have been some big changes too: Brighton became an annexed city byDenver in 2002 so it has more of an authority than before; then again annexation can sometimes happen arbitrarily so it’s hard to say for sure what really happened! Brighton, Colorado was founded in 1879 by James W. Goodwin and his wife Catharine. The town was named after the English city of Brighton, which had been a center of trade in the area for many years prior. Goodwin opened a wagon dealership here in 1879 and soon began to sell goods to settlers who were moving into the area from other parts of Colorado. In 1886, Goodwin donated land to establish what is now Brighton Village, which became one of the most important localities in the town during its early days. The first school in Brighton was built on property that Goodwin donated to the town. The first teacher at this school was Miss Jane Bentley. By 1890, there were six schools in Brighton with total enrollment numbering over 1,000 students. The growth of Brighton during these early years led to increased development within the town boundaries and more businesses were established within easy reach of residents. In 1895, Goodwin donated another piece of land to establish what is now known as downtown Brighton. This new district quickly became one ofruce major commercial areas in town and served as an important transportation hub for people working near downtown or traveling between different parts of Colorado. During World War I, much effort was put into helping war-time veterans find housing and support programs once they returned home. In 1919, Mayor John Ahern made history when he proclaimed Brighton an official community by issuing a proclamation congratulating all towns situated along Interstate 25 on their designation as “community communities” pursuant to state law no longer permitting independent municipalities status within state borders . From 1927 until 1972, mayorships were held every two years by members of the City Council instead of elected officials; this allowed more time for council members to spend their time on various civic duties rather than running for office each year . This system eventually failed due to political infighting among councilmembers and lack thereof overall leadership skills ; however, it remains a proud tradition that has continued throughout recent municipal history in both Denver and Aurora . One such prominent resident who spent many years living and working near downtown Brighton was Drue Laddington , who also served as presidential candidate for Colorado Springs (1938). During her time on Capitol Hill she also helped develop some groundbreaking legislation related to women’s rights issues; including becoming one of only two female lawmakers representing her state when she took office . She would continue serving her constituents through private practice until her death at age ninety-six in 1984 . A water tower was built in 1914 and a library were opened in 1916. In 1924, a large cotton gin and railyard were built in Brighton. In 1930, an expressway was built through the town and it remains operational to this day.
