The first permanent settler in Brighton was John Prentice who arrived in 1876. He and his family built a cabin on what is now South Meridian Street. In 1881, he married Margaret Bemis and they had three children: John (1882-1985), Margaret (1884-1951), and Alice (1887-1968). They farmed until 1889 when Mr. Prentice sold his land to Jacob Fenton for $2,500. In 1893, Mrs. Fenton married Wm Hutton and their families moved to Brighton from Golden Valley where they had been living since 1870. In 1907, businessman Harry Weisfeld bought some land east of town from Mrs. Fenton for $3,000 dollars which he developed into subdivisions including Belleview Estates and Crestline Addition which became Brighton's first shopping center with a variety of stores including JCPenney, Sears Roebuck & Co., Gimbels Department Store, Kmart Supercenter and Myer Arcade among others In 1924 Harry Weisfeld donated the land that now contains the downtown core of Brighton to Townsite Incorporated as a public park which remains one of its primary functions today According to the 2000 Census there were 1,542 people in Brighton according to 1980 US Census data with an increase of 547 (+25%) to 2,512 by 2010 census estimates . The racial makeup of Brighton was 96% white European American while 3% black or African American . Hispanic or Latino residents made up 1%. There were 7% Asian Americans followed by 0% Native Americans . According to2010 US Census data , household incomes ranged from $350000-$1490000 with an average income above $152000 .
