Gaulden erected a small fort on land that now makes up Depot Road. The fort served as a garrison until 1883 when it was transferred to Bureau of Indian Affairs control. In 1906, Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a permanent military installation in Douglas County and nominations were received by Colonel Augustus Biddle, commanding officer at Ft. Willamette Heights. The new base was named Camp Sheridan after Major General James Ewing Sheridan who had played a role in making Denver the capital of Colorado Territory during the late 19th century. In World War I, Camp Sheridan served as an airfield for training pilots before being turned into barracks for servicemen arriving from all over Colorado and Wyoming. By 1919 it had become known as “the Training Center” because so many soldiers had been sent here during World War I that it could accommodate only about 12 officers and 100 enlisted men per month plus their families who slept on concrete floors without any privacy or ventilation possibilities other than through open windows which became black smears against white walls due to Army Regulation 519-25 (later rescinded). It closed its doors permanently on December 10th 1920 following World War I. After World War I ended, Camp Sheridan reopened under civilian control as part of Readjustment Plan No 11 which lasted from 1922-1927 inclusive and again from 1933-1935 inclusive within Army/Navy Department Donations program operated by Friends Service Committee with help from local citizens with money contributed by businesses etcetera until finally closing its doors again effective August 15th 1935 pursuant toArmy Regulation 690-5(c) ( later rescinded ). Finally closure came about because during those years San Miguel County council decided they needed more room built upon their existing site adjacent to Interstate 25 also proceeding with plans submitted by county engineer Charles Seltzer whereby entire area would be developed into Planned Unit Development Authority straddling both freeways – much like our current downtown area redevelopment project going forward!
